The Medici were involved with a lot of artists during the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Botticelli were among these artists. da Vinci and Michelangelo were both prime examples of the “Renaissance Man”, who was a person who had a wide understanding of many different subjects. Leonardo da Vinci was a talented young man who lived in Italy. He had initially been employed by Verrocchio, a talented painter. However, after seeing how amazing of an artist da Vinci was, Verrocchio decided to quit painting for good. Soon after that, da Vinci met Lorenzo de Medici, who was very impressed with his artistic skills. Leonardo da Vinci went on to create many amazing pieces of art, including “The Last Supper” and “The Mona Lisa”. However, he spent so much money on banquets and other pointless things that he and the Catholic Church soon ran out of money. In order to solve his problem, he started to sell indulgences to the people. Indulgences were pieces of papers that acted as “pardons”. For example, if a sinner were to die and go to heaven, they would be automatically forgiven of their sins because they had bought an indulgence when they were alive. However, Leo wasn’t getting enough money from these indulgences. So he convinced the people to start paying for indulgences in advance, because it was almost guaranteed they would sin in the future. Leo was still not happy with the amount of money he was getting, so he decided to take these “indulgences” to the next level. He told the people that it was now possible to buy indulgences for the deceased. Of course, people would buy these indulgences to make sure that their deceased loved ones would be guaranteed a safe passage to
