Medical Field Experience

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler stated with respect to medicine, “I early conceived a liking for, and sought every opportunity to relieve the sufferings of others. I feel that the medical profession uniquely incorporates my devotion for science with my longing to aid others. Medicine is limitless; like no other profession, it completely expresses both my humanistic worth and intellectual ideals. I have been curious about medicine since the age of five. I always wanted to tend to those who were in need of comfort and it transcended from there. In order to be more familiar with what being a physician actually entails, I asked questions to the physicians that I had known growing up. Eager to get a hands on experience, I applied for an internship during …show more content…
From observing patients with autism, ADHD, and Down syndrome I learned how they view the world, how to create targeted plans for them, and how to distinguish behavior that is or is not a cause for concern. I also gained a clearer understanding of the daily challenges that these physicians encounter. Each patient exhibited an array of symptoms that often were grounds for specialized attention. In order for the physician to assist a patient and their parents in dealing with a specific disorder or diagnosis, it was extremely important for him or her to take into consideration the emotional needs of the patient. Especially in situations that are often stressful, I garnered a newfound appreciation for how the physicians remained warm and offered reassurance, this changed the parents and patients fear into hope and strength. My motivation for being a physician specialized in this field stems from 2004 the year my then 3 year old brother was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition to this, the year 2016 was also a relatively critical one. It was during this time that my now 15 year old brother received what we suspected, which was a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although this was a difficult pill to swallow we were willing to do any and everything to make sure he would not have to …show more content…
One of my personal goals was to take the initiative to interact with others with the hope to formulate newfound relationships by networking. I enjoyed representing my University, as a diverse community, we had various ambassador opportunities to discuss educational programs, trending topics in science, and the generosity of donors.
Another interest that I have further explored is my fascination with conducting research. I was selected to be in the Short Term Educational Experiences for Research in Environmental Science for Undergraduates (STEER) Program this summer I was assigned to work with Dr. Jongens a faculty member in the genetics department at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Our research was centered on determining if varying sucrose concentrations affected the weight, survival, and longevity of Drosophila (fruit flies) in comparison to the control flies. As a senior I am completing an independent study project on the motility of microorganisms in soil. Because my experience engaging in research has added a unique dimension to my education, I feel that it is important to support the research interests of other future physicians and students. As president of the Neumann University’s Sigma Zeta Math and Honor Society, I have assisted students in continuing to reach of their dreams especially in the field of

Temple Grandin has become widely known for her advocacy of autism and throughout the book describes medications, new treatment, and advice for teaching and mentoring those with autism. However, treatment can be controversial, overwhelming for a family and provide a false hope for a total cure. She slowly turned toward me and smiled, overwhelming joy spread across her face as she replied, “Yes, this is my first pregnancy”. It had been a busy night in the ultrasound department and after three years of experience working as the solo technologist on the weekend midnight shift I had become all too familiar with the challenges of the healthcare field. As any medical professional can attest to, there are significant encounters we face that have the momentum to change your life, this is one of those moments. My voice remained calm and my hands steady as I reassured her that this was a routine scan to assess the well-being of the baby.…

The experience gave me the opportunity to work in a clinic and observe what the day-to-day professional life of a doctor entails. I learned about the work involved before seeing a patient including checking for insurance eligibility and prescription use. I learned how to check patient 's vital signs and how to take notes during a medical appointment and upload those notes into patients ' health records. I was able to form strong bonds with the patients over the course of my internship which I particularly enjoyed. The clinic felt like a close community with all the interns, staff and Dr. Liu working closely together in order to provide care for the patients and getting to know them in the process.…

¬The nursing home reeked from disease and neglect. I met Marvin, a tall, ninety-year-old hospice patient who was suffering from malignant neoplasm of prostate and bone marrow. He was deaf and nearly blind, and my supervisor from Mission Hospice suggested that I used the small whiteboard in Marvin’s room to communicate with him. Shortly after my arrival, Marvin asked me if I could take him out on his wheelchair, for it had been days since he had been outside of the building. After he felt the sunshine on his skin, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a few minutes.…

I do know someone who holds a position in the healthcare field that I may want to hold in the future. My cousin is a doctor who works from home and is always on call. I have not learned much of anything from her. Things I can do to familiarize myself with that role is by asking her questions about some of the tasks she performs and looking them up myself to further educate myself on it. I can also ask to become an intern at the hospital she work at to see some of the things she deals with on a daily…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

As my years went on, I began to understand my brothers disorder. The constant agony my parents went through was heartbreaking to sit back at watch. It was not until my brother, Dylan Ellis, transferred to a different elementary school where his parents discovered he had ADHD. My mom, Diane Ellis, always knew that Dylan was different; he would run around the house like crazy, but the most outstanding issue that Diane found was his attention span was lower than most children. I will never forget his multiple anger outbreaks, which result in Dylan acting in an extreme physical manner.…
