Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler stated with respect to medicine, “I early conceived a liking for, and sought every opportunity to relieve the sufferings of others. I feel that the medical profession uniquely incorporates my devotion for science with my longing to aid others. Medicine is limitless; like no other profession, it completely expresses both my humanistic worth and intellectual ideals. I have been curious about medicine since the age of five. I always wanted to tend to those who were in need of comfort and it transcended from there. From observing patients with autism, ADHD, and Down syndrome I learned how they view the world, how to create targeted plans for them, and how to distinguish behavior that is or is not a cause for concern. I also gained a clearer understanding of the daily challenges that these physicians encounter. Each patient exhibited an array of symptoms that often were grounds for specialized attention. In order for the physician to assist a patient and their parents in dealing with a specific disorder or diagnosis, it was extremely important for him or her to take into consideration the emotional needs of the patient. Especially in situations that are often stressful, I garnered a newfound appreciation for how the physicians remained warm and offered reassurance, this changed the parents and patients fear into hope and strength. My motivation for being a physician specialized in this field stems from 2004 the year my then 3 year old brother was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition to this, the year 2016 was also a relatively critical one. It was during this time that my now 15 year old brother received what we suspected, which was a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although this was a difficult pill to swallow we were willing to do any and everything to make sure he would not have to …show more content…
One of my personal goals was to take the initiative to interact with others with the hope to formulate newfound relationships by networking. I enjoyed representing my University, as a diverse community, we had various ambassador opportunities to discuss educational programs, trending topics in science, and the generosity of donors.
Another interest that I have further explored is my fascination with conducting research. I was selected to be in the Short Term Educational Experiences for Research in Environmental Science for Undergraduates (STEER) Program this summer I was assigned to work with Dr. Jongens a faculty member in the genetics department at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Our research was centered on determining if varying sucrose concentrations affected the weight, survival, and longevity of Drosophila (fruit flies) in comparison to the control flies. As a senior I am completing an independent study project on the motility of microorganisms in soil. Because my experience engaging in research has added a unique dimension to my education, I feel that it is important to support the research interests of other future physicians and students. As president of the Neumann University’s Sigma Zeta Math and Honor Society, I have assisted students in continuing to reach of their dreams especially in the field of
