I have always wanted to be in the medical field since my encounter with Cuban doctors who volunteered in my town when I was in 6th grade but I never worked hard toward that dream until I came to the United States my junior year of high school. Coming to the United States gave me hope that my dream of being a medical doctor who could help people living in poverty stricken areas could actually come true. Coming from a low-income country and town myself, I understand what it means to not have medical attention when in dire need of it due to inability to pay medical bills, not having enough medical personnel for a town and also nonchalant behavior of people toward modern medicine. Bolgatanga is the name of the town I grew up in, it is the capital …show more content…
Paracetamol became a household name because whenever someone had a headache, ‘paracetamol was the cure’. Soon enough, volunteers started flooding into my town to help with good sanitation education and promoting the importance of education in my town as these were main issues they faced. But the group of volunteers that really impacted me and changed my life were medical volunteers from Cuba. When they initially came to the town, they settled at the regional hospital but after they realized that not all the townspeople could receive help that way, they went out personally from house to house to treat people. As I learnt later from the doctors, most of the diseases were water and food-borne diseases and were totally treatable if detected on time; but unfortunately, many people died day in and out because they never got treated. The volunteers stayed for only two weeks but during that short span, I was inspired so much by them to do what they did selflessly. Before they left, they gave me a brochure that outlined the importance of going to see the doctor rather which I used to educate more people about the benefits of going to see the doctor whenever they were sick. Nonetheless, the problem still remained that there weren’t enough doctors to see all these people and the price to see the doctors was way too high for the peasant

A large part of the book is dedicated towards highlighting the experiences of the patients at PMH and thus provides narratives of various people in the ward. Now, one side of the social experience is due to the compact size of the clinic. In a situation where families are washing dirty wounds, nurses are looking after the relatives in the ward, and beds are lined up close to one another, the setup makes it difficult for patients to ignore the rounds of vomiting after chemotherapy. This environment is made further unbearable with recurring amputations resulting from an inflow of patients with late-stage cancer. Although morphine and codeine are rather inexpensive, they are always in a short supply at PMH, leading Livingston to depict the overlooked issues of pain in Botswana and an overall invisibility of cancer in Africa as it trails the HIV/AIDS epidemic.…

Personal Statement Growing up in rural Colombia in the midst of the coffee region where individuals from all over the country, especially indigenous and those with limited resources would come to tender the coffee fields, I realize now that it gave me a view of how healthcare is not a right but a luxury. The political turmoil and my brother’s health condition forced us to flee our beloved country to seek help in a foreign, unknown land: The United States. After almost three arduous years of all of us going in and out of hospitals, my brother got the surgery he needed and his life was changed forever. Soon after, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and my life now changed. Being young, not even fifteen years old, and dealing with a condition…

Why Do you Want to become a Physician Assistant: As we grow up, our experiences, life lessons, and failures are like puzzle pieces which shape us into who we become. These experiences help us find our passion, which is ingrained in our heart. Mrs. X, a 70- year-old sickle-cell anemic patient who weighs 75 pounds, comes into the Faith Family and Health Clinic for her regular check-up. I hold her hands and help her walk into the examination room. I notice that she is too weak to hop into the examination table by herself, and so I pick her up and set her down in a comfortable position.…

I decided to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU) for a variety of reasons, including the location of its campus, because I was offered a full scholarship, and of course, because of the pharmacy program. Moreover, I believe that I am the ideal candidate for being a part of FAMU’s pharmacy program. To begin, FAMU is located in Tallahassee, Florida, a city that I had wanted to attend college in since I was in elementary school. Tallahassee is a city of containing and surrounded by many events and opportunities, so no matter your preferred “scene,” you are likely to be able to find something you do. Another upside to FAMU’s location is that it also places me very close to my mother and the rest of my maternal family, who I had previously not gotten to see almost since elementary school.…

Thus, I enrolled in a volunteering program at Greenwich Hospital in order to not only encounter a doctor’s working environment, but also to serve the patients who are a member of my community in Greenwich. In the hospital my job can range from sorting and arranging hundreds of mails, escorting patients, helping with maintaining hygiene, to sending flowers to the patients. According to my supervisor and the volunteers’ website, there are approximately a total of 700 volunteers who the staff believe to be the unsound heros of the hospital. Due to the number of volunteers, the staff assign us to different sections of the hospital within which assigning to be an escorter is one of my favorite as it allows me to encounter patients and doctors from different departments. Gradually from observation and conversation with many of the doctors in the hospital and some of my father’s friends I perceived the drudgery, the stress, the paper works, the coordination, the management skills that are necessary for surviving in this field after having endured the hardship of medical school.…

My gut sank to an unbearable low as I watched my thirty-two-year-old mother require support to limp just five steps to the restroom; cancer stripped her of life. At twelve-years-old, I felt distraught in my inability to save her and return the endless love that my Haitian parents poured into my nurturing. However, the hope the physicians brought us has inspired me to become a doctor so that I, too, can serve as an envoy of hope to sufferers of illness. My father is a physician I strive to be like. Every patient always has a smile on their face after seeing him because he does not only treat diseases: he treats people.…

I was born and raised in Michigan. I grew up in an area known as Downriver, where I still reside today. My high school and the barn where I work/volunteer are both within 3 miles of my home, which is why moving to Michigan State University in East Lansing to join the other 50,000 undergraduate students was such a substantial change. I’ve always been adaptable and driven to succeed, so the adjustment to life in East Lansing was not a difficult one for me. Since I’ve been enrolled as a student at Michigan State University, I was granted the extraordinary opportunity to work at the Michigan State University Horse Teaching & Research Center while also being involved in both the Stock Seat Equestrian Team and the Horse Judging Team where I’ve been extremely successful.…

I believe that my admission to the KU School of Nursing would contribute to this philosophy in many ways. I was raised in a community where a Hispanic woman, like myself, was not expected to graduate from high school, let alone attend college. The expectations for minorities are not set as high, which is unbelievable and also very sad. There is hope for minorities like me and I believe that my admission into your school would show my community as well as many patients that minorities can have a successful career and anybody can rise beyond where they were raised. I graduated from high school with honors, as well as with a full-ride scholarship to college.…

During the past 15 years, I have aided my community in a multitude of ways. These include recycling, giving money to the poor, helping the injured, and giving my time to the needy. Even though the timeframe we are observing, between September of last year and today, may have a limited scope of all that I have dones, it does not mean I have not done anything. I have helped the needy and disadvantaged, saved the environment, and donated to organizations. I believe that, if I were accepted into the prestigious NHS, I could contribute my charity and intellect, and hopefully I can help the world through a national organization…
