The medical community has been a large influence in my life quite literally since birth. I attended my father’s college graduation as a young child and studied with him throughout medical school. We ate pizza together while I learned fractions. He would hand me a slice, put the box back up on the cadaver and continue studying for gross anatomy. I always wanted to “join the family business,” but time and time again my father would have to explain how it doesn’t quite work that way. By the time I was in high school I had observed more surgeries than most interns. I could have gone right through college and taken the more direct approach to medical school, but I had a life to live before I found my true calling for medicine.

When he unexpectedly collapsed, I assessed his condition and appropriately treated him for heat stroke. I called a medic over and much to the chagrin of my Drill Instructors, stole away with him in the ambulance to the hospital. The extra duty and push-ups were well worth the experience. I would go on to be a Foreign Language Analyst in the military, but that experience remained with me and eventually blossomed into a passion. It was a very moving experience to apply critical thinking and medical knowledge to a situation and use my hands to treat another human …show more content…
While a great many people my age were graduating college, I was teaching, leading, and guiding junior marines and raising a family. The leadership and worldly experience I gained was invaluable. Seeing and helping Marines returning from combat further fueled my burgeoning interest in medicine. With every fallen or wounded brother and sister, my compassion and desire to help and heal deepened. Combat Lifesaver was nice. I was able to use and apply it, but I have always felt a higher calling to the medical community.
The same day I left active duty, my family moved across country so that I could attend college. Two years and six semesters later, I graduated with honors. Marine Corps discipline and a fierce determination allowed me to work, study, volunteer, shadow physicians, and raise a family of six all while being a reservist with the Marine Corps. Every moment I chose to play with my sons over catching up on much needed sleep, or to study and miss out on my daughter’s “firsts,” proved to myself how dedicated I was to becoming a

Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. It was more of one of those forks in the road, a kin to the Robert Frost Poem, where one path leads to life A and the other leads to life B. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…

It was there where I learned that sometimes the best help that you can give these patients is to lend them an ear and a shoulder to cry on. Immediately after completing my undergraduate studies at UCLA, I took on a full-time job as a medical scribe for an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Vakili, in order to increase my exposure to clinical medicine. One of my proudest moments was feeling the trust Dr. Vakili put in me when he asked me to fill in for an absent nurse by taking a patient 's vitals prior to his examination. Since I have moved on to my graduate studies, I have scaled back to part-time, but retaining the position has allowed me to continue polishing my ability to interact with patients during medical examination and to write accurate medical reports and histories. For as long as I can remember, I have excelled at collaborative teaching and learning.…
