There are many professions in which I have been looking into for a career. I originally attended Carroll College in hopes of getting a degree in biology, taking the Medical College Admissions Test applying at a few medical schools and hopefully be accepted at the University of Washington. Much has changed in my life since my freshman year, and so have my aspirations. My motives are still the same as they were when I first came to Carroll; I still want to go into the medical field in order to help people, but many challenges have presented themselves to me in recent years, namely finances, stress and motivation. The more I looked into Medical schools the more overwhelming it seemed, and the less confident I have become in conquering my original …show more content…
Prosthetics are devices used to replace a missing or damaged limb and make the wearer able to regain the functions that they previously have lost. This field has been around for centuries and has been advancing drastically in recent years as technology advances. Like prosthetics, orthotics are devices that are used to regain or enhance the function of a body part and again like prosthetics they are rapidly improving. Prosthetics focus on making anthromorphic limbs to replace missing ones for anything from cancer, and diabetes to birth defects. They are usually created to bring back human like characteristics and functions. Orthotics focuses more on rehabilitation devices such as braces and supports. Common uses for braces are to help straighten out scoliosis or help strengthen joints and assist movement. So as the name suggests an orthotic and prosthetic practitioner is a health care worker who specializes with the care, fitting and treatment of individuals who require artificial limbs and orthopedic …show more content…
From what I have found the need for O&P practitioners is rapidly increasing with about a 36% increase by the year 2022 (bls.gov). This rapid increase is due to many factors, but like most of the medical field this increase is due to increases in geriatric patients from the aging population from the baby boomer generation. It is also increasing due to increased bariatric patients and higher cases of obesity and diabetes (explore). Currently there are about 9000 jobs and 3000 more are estimated to open up by 2022 (bls.gov). Many who graduate as O&P practitioners make a career of it. This is due to many reasons, the first being the versatility of working environments. Since O&P practitioners are medical professionals they can work in many places such as a hospital, rehabilitation center, private practice, clinics and various laboratories dedicated to the process of creating and modifying O&P devices

The client is involved in the design process from the beginning, and the transformation can be profound. “They appear to hold themselves more proudly. I think this is a combination of how it feels to wear the piece itself and the fact that they have been so involved in the process. Generally, when clients wear their prosthetic limbs, they receive positive attention, as it breaks down barriers. Rather than pity, people view them with curiosity, and in many cases have even shown signs of genuine envy, all of which is empowering for the wearer.…

Dear Carolyn Boles Scholarship Committee, I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI.…

By 2030 “Non-primary care specialties are expected to experience a shortfall of between 33,500 and 61,800 physicians.” Becoming a physician assistant increases access to health care and since the shortage of physicians the past years it also benefits the economy. I also help reduce the work for a doctor, so they can see more patients. Becoming a physician allows me to provide quality care that is cost effective. I began my educational journey at Georgia State University as an enthusiastic pre-medicine major with a very unrealistic goal of taking on the world. I told myself I would sacrifice anything to become a doctor, including accepting the possibility of never having children due to how hard it would be for me to spend quality time with them. I constantly worried about the finances required for my education, if my parents had the necessary funds to pay their bills, and much more. As far as my academic performance, I was never satisfied with my science grade point average. I felt inferior to my classmates who seemed to absorb and comprehend information at a faster rate in comparison to me.…

Some of the different kinds we have today include Robotic, Body Powered, Brain-Controlled, and Myoelectric. A robotic prosthesis is already programmed with commands and movements that the limb would normally have, while body powered prosthesis are manual. For instance, a body powered arm moves when your other arm makes a movement that pulls the strap. A brain-controlled prosthetic senses the electrical signals in the brain and in turn attempts to make the desired movement. Along the same lines are the Myoelectric prosthesis that sense the electrical signals from the muscle contractions in the remaining limb.…
