“You’ve got mail!” that’s right, I’ve got 66,483 emails in my inbox. That would be the current total in my Gmail account that I opened on 09/17/2005. Over eleven years of Electronic Era media history stored in my Gmail inbox – and during that time, various forms of media were born and became obsolete. The Media Ecology Theory (MET) is used to describe a what I see is a cycle – it depicts forms of communication that are given the symbol of the word technology – but that technology isn’t limited to only the electronic technology of today, but with the technology of a particular time in history. For example: ipods, palm pilots, mp3 players, flip phones and VCRs have nearly become obsolete during the short eleven-year lifespan of my Gmail account. And the phrase “You’ve got mail” was created by America Online, but made famous by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in 1998 Movie with the same name, “You’ve got mail.” This phrase reminds me just how far we have come…. Which reminded me of my old business venture. I was really good at sending out mass-faxes to businesses in order to generate leads and sales for different companies and services. I thought it was completely amazing that I could load a document with pictures and words; and then through the phone line, send those words and pictures to thousands of fax machines all over the country. I thought I was really innovative and cutting edge with my techy skills and equipment. Then I became a spammer, and a really good spammer, who had 27 people also spamming for me in many different countries, including Russia, South Korea, Canada, Singapore, and Brazil. I started my business working for a local businessman, the infamous Jeremy Johnson. I emailed ads for his business to 10-12 Million email accounts a day. Then each of my contracted workers did the same on an affiliate plan. They were paid on a per sale basis. CPA Cost per acquisition. Some of the “mailers” specialized in getting into AOL, some Yahoo, some Hotmail and most just had various addresses that they would either “mine” or they had “spiders,” like me, that would crawl to gather email addresses from various
