Media Shapes Society

What goes on in your daily news feed? The media shares stories from all across the world from financial problems to gun shootings. It can cause many problems but can also be helpful. It may be frustrating at times, but it also brings people together in times of pain and need. Unfortunately, the media causes their audience to stereotype certain groups of people, which makes some new stories to cause things to get out of hand. The news media shapes our society by reporting on gun control, racism, and the economy. In the media you hear many stories about gun violence. Recently in Virginia we had a shooting on August 26th 2015, at WDBJ 7 in Roanoke. Gunman Vester Lee Flanagan II, age 41, was fired from WDBJ in 2013 for disruptive conduct. Alison Parker, age 24 and Adam Ward, age 27, were on live television interviewing Vicki Gardner when Vester came in and shot at Alison, Adam, and Vicki. Alison and Adam were both killed, but Vicki survived the shooting. The CPJ (Committee to protect journalist) sates that “at least five journalists have been killed in the country in direct relation to their work since 1992, when CPJ began keeping records.” People are debating whether we should have tighter gun laws or if it would even matter. A shooting brings people together to care and love for those who are in need and who has just lost someone, as we experienced with Alison Parker and Adam Ward. Racism is wrong and hurtful and can lead to ruthless behavior, such as the shooting with Officer Slager and Walter Scott. Our economy is displayed all over the media and it shows how we can get excited for new things as in technology or get upset about things as in welfare and our tax dollars.
