The American Dream, it is a very well known statement, though over the years its meaning has changed for many people, and for some it no longer has meaning at all. There are some people that are optimistic in life and they believe in things like the American dream, in the words of Stanford I. Well, “ I think that the American Dream says that anything can happen if you work hard enough at it and are persistent, and have some ability. The sky is the limit to what you can build, and what can happen to you and your family”(BrainyQuote, 2). Then there are the realists, the people that see the facts in the situation and rely on those facts to form their opinions. Which does not count the number of people that are not eligible for unemployment, delay applying or never apply for the benefits at all or others whose benefits have run out. Though the unemployed often cannot find work for a variety of reasons, some will face difficulty from lack of education, being unqualified, injury or having a disability, but other people have trouble finding work because of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation which makes it difficult for them to find jobs. Still when these people are able to secure jobs the pay that they receive is often not enough to support them, especially if they have a family to provide for, meaning that even if they do have jobs they still may need help. With help from the government and other organizations, some people are able to make ends meet. This includes affordable housing, food assistance, help with bills, military benefits/ programs, unemployment benefits/ programs, and other benefits of which about 52.2 million or 21.3% people in America participated government assistance programs each month in the year 2012. With 17,223 children living with only a mother and 3,006 children living with only a father the financial strain put on single parents are throughout the county. These parents will need to work over 125 hours, with no wage increase, to reach the United State’s cost of living threshold for a single parent which is $910 dollars a week. Though the monthly cost of living as a single parent with one child is $3,943 and the annual cost is $47,324 dollars. Thought with more children the prices and work hours need will continue to rise with over one hundred hours a week needed to earn over a thousand dollars a week to support four children according to the United State’s cost of living threshold. Those numbers show that harsh reality of what single parents struggle with that means it is nearly impossible for them to stay afloat and reach their American Dream. For homes with two parents with the cost of caring for children can range from $4,681 with one child with $6,905 with four kids on average a month or the annual averages of $56,176 to $82,871. Which causes the parents to need to work a total of 113 hours a week to support one child, this allows parents to meet the United State’s cost of living threshold of $1,080.
