It is by analyzing the slogans that we realize the irony that they bring.
This interesting quote, written by George Orwell in his famous novel called 1984, made many of his lectors quite perplexed at the beginning of the lecture.
What was Orwell trying to communicate by initiating this little paragraph in his novel? What is its meaning? To enter in the context quite shortly, in the 1984 book, the goal of the INGSC (Newspeak for English Socialism or the English Socialist Party), was to be able to manipulate people’s mind by making them believe what the INGSC wanted them to believe such as ‘’2+2=5’’ or such as this famous and important quote that inevitably was controlling most of people’s mind.
For the sake of power, the party had created a mind system called the “doublethink” which would make the population accept that two contradictory beliefs can be both accepted as true or correct.This quote was the most significant quote considering the doublethink concept. “War is peace Freedom is slavery Ignorance is strength”

The fact that Oceania was in constant war represented that they had a perpetual enemy which symbolized that the population of Oceania needed to be in union in order to be in “peace”. Nonetheless, this statement is thoroughly illogical when we look at the definition of peace in the dictionary which states that peace is “freedom from or the cessation of war or violence”. Rationally, war cannot be compared to peace because they are two mutually contradictory beliefs, which brings us to the idea of the doublethink. It has the method to control thoughts, to make the society actually believe what the party is suggesting, to hold them away from the truth which would push them to leave the government. In order to prevent this to happen, the INGSC provided the second slogan, “freedom is slavery”. Two total antithetical words that are supposed to mean the same thing. According to the dictionary, the definition of freedom is “the absence of subjection to foreign domination or despotic government.” The irony that entails this definition compared to the slogan of the most totalitarian government defines the absurdity of the
