Williams needs to prove to herself that she can be equal to white excellence in achievements. From the text, one can conclude that society influences the aspect of appearance to critics. Williams is treated with disrespect in the industry because she’s a black female athlete and is criticized for her excellence. The passage implies that everyone disrespects and is opinionated about Williams instead of focusing on the tennis match. The issue is based on how people naturally have a negative judgement towards race and body image. I disagree with the issue and I believe that one should judge Williams or anyone based on their performance of excellence or their persona instead of making accusations about appearance. The man was cheering for the opposite opponent, Victoria Azarenka. Rankine asks him if he is American and why is he cheering for the opposite opponent. He states that he is American and he wants to see a competitive match. Towards the end of the match, he leaves before Williams is declared the victor. Rankine naturally categorizes an American man as being a racist for cheering on Azarenka, a non-American while Williams is American as well. Rankine couldn’t prove from that observation that the man is a racist. What if his cultural background comes from Lithuania and was supporting his family's’ country? Or that he’d gambled money that Azarenka, an underdog would win? The man could have also been a really huge fan of Azarenka.
