When Rosaura was putting her daughter to sleep, fear struck her at the sight of the dark room: “She saw a strange glow coming from the dark room. Plumes of phosphorescent colors were ascending to the sky like delicate Bengal lights” (158). Pedro’s passion towards Tita is remarkably strong and holds “plumes of phosphorescent colors”. The colors are Pedro’s passionate emotions – intense, bright and grand like a firework. Fireworks can only be produced when the material is heated to a very high temperature. Pedro’s passion resembles fireworks – it is so hot that it can produce light and color. His passion not only brings blessings, but also misfortune. When Tita and Pedro die after making love: “The dark room was transformed into an erupting volcano. It cast stones reached high enough, they exploded into multicolored lights” (245). The passion Tita and Pedro have for each other is limitless that it transforms the dark room into a volcano. Just like a volcano, their passion is hot and wild. Their wild love is uncontrollable and is impossible to stop. Their love is hot, constantly passionate and full of desires. This passion never surfaces when Tita is with John, moreover Tita often questions her love for John, whether it is real love or simply a friendship. Love is not only a feeling but also a commitment. During his wedding with Rosaura, Pedro said to Tita: “I am sure I will be, since through this marriage I have gained what I really wanted: the chance to be near you, the women I really love” (38). When Pedro is informed that Tita couldn’t marry, he did not give up. He came up with a plan, which is to marry Tita’s sister in order to be close to Tita. He is willing to do anything for the “women [he] really love”; even if it means to marry Tita’s sister, Rosaura, a woman whom he doesn’t love. After Alex and Esperanza’s wedding, Pedro and Tita made love: “Surely Pedro had died at the moment of ecstasy
