Reflective Essay: The Meaning Of Literacy

Great Essays
The meaning of literacy is that you can connect to something through proper reading and writing. This meaning does not remain the same throughout a person’s life. In today’s society being a literate person is extremely important. From getting a job or going to the grocery store, a person is required to be literate to some point, allowing them to communicate properly. Though all parts of my childhood and young adulthood have been connected to literacy and sometimes I didn’t realize the connection until later. From elementary school, high school, first attempt at college, and to my current job, I’ve realized how the meaning of literacy has changed through each stage of my life and how it has improved. In my earlier years of elementary school …show more content…
Writing was now my main focus of literacy and seemed difficult for me and did not come with ease. Writing was never my strong suit and quite honest it still isn’t. With many hours of writing and re-writing papers for English classes, my writing slowly started to improve. Knowing now how much writing means and how much it’s used every day, I wish I would have worked harder and would not have procrastinated on my essays throughout high school. By not paying attention in class and always trying to go un-noticed, my writing slowed in improvement. Due to being afraid that someone was going to make fun of my writing, I flew under the radar, this caused me to slowly but steadily fall behind while others improved on their writing. Knowing that this fear of showing others my writing and receiving feedback had to be broken was always on my mind, but the longer I waited the harder it became to break. After starting my first college English class I realized what part of my fear was. It had to do with coming from a small town where I almost knew the birthday for every kid in my grade and that my English teacher had been best friends with my parents. In high school this had never crossed my mind that this could have been why I was afraid of sharing my work. Being afraid that if I made a grammar error or had a bad essay my teacher would tell my parents I was doing poor and class mates would tell my friends …show more content…
My plans were to move to Phoenix, AZ to attend Harley Davidson Technician School and the cost of school was outrages. About a month before I moved to Phoenix I heard of a job opening in San Angelo, TX and decided to apply, thinking it wouldn’t hurt to save money for a year before going to school. About two weeks before leaving for Phoenix I ended up getting the job and I’m still here almost three years later and have no doubt that this is my calling, also learning to be literate in many different ways. As I move up the ladder in my career I have noticed that the meaning of literacy is now understanding the different skills of communication with co-workers and computer programs. Working as an automation technician in the oil field, power plants, or any other automation field, I’ve have had to learn a completely different vocabulary than I’ve ever known. Along with this came new computer programs that I had never seen before. ABB TotalFlow G4 boards and Scada systems are examples of technology that I use every day and had to learn on the go and in the field. I have had little training, but picked up on the literacy and the new technology quite quick. The ABB TotalFlow systems measures gas flow rates and fluid rates coming out of the ground and then relays it onto the Scada system that makes these readings assessable to Pumpers and

If you were to ask me what literacy meant to me when I was younger, I would tell you, that it represented reading a book, and simply writing. As a child I thought literacy had to deal with English class, although it does relate, there is much more to literacy than we think. Being young, I wasn’t aware of the definition of literacy, and if you are anything like me, you would eventually have to just learn on your own. Growing up I rarely thought about what literacy truly meant, but I can say that it was a question I was curious about. As I matured as a student and took more English classes, my knowledge of literacy, reading and writing, grew.…

I was surprised to read how the term literacy has changed over time and all of the meaning that it now holds. “Literacy has morphed to characterize someone’s level of knowledge or competence in a particular area or subject,” according to Vacca (2014, p. 12). Reading and writing were the first concepts that would come to my mind when thinking of the word literacy, therefore, I was shocked to read how “complex and multidimensional the concept of literacy”(Vacca, 2014, p. 12) has become. Computer literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and health literacy are just a few examples of this concept. As society’s ability to communicate has evolved, so has the concept of literacy.…

When I think of the word literacy, the first thing that comes to mind is vocabulary. I think of literacy as the amount of vocabulary an individual has in their mind. You need a wide variety of vocabulary in order to be sufficiently successful at reading and writing. The dictionary may say that the definition is the ability to read and/or write, but without vocabulary both of those are nearly impossible to do because vocabulary is the foundation for all reading and writing. When I look back on my life and try to think of things that helped shape me to become the reader/writer I am today, I can find many things.…

Learning to read is a skill many can obtain quickly or not so well. Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

My Struggles of Literacy and How I Work to Fix Them Literacy, in my eyes, is the way of sharing ideas, facts, and emotion. Emotional literacy such as poetry has had a big role in what I read today. They can express things in simplicity and make it so vivid at the same time. Any book can have the ability to change a perspective on a certain topic or helps me acknowledge the things around me. Enjoying to read has never been the issue, but pronouncing certain words that I’m reading has.…

Writing: Bilingualism and Culture Throughout my high school years, literacy was presented to students as a boring task; one where opinions were not considered and what was mostly important was the overall message the author presented. It was defined as the ability to read and write. However, what does literacy really mean? I believe literacy is what allows you to express yourself and to voice your opinion.…

Owen Sanders Mr. Coby EH 101-023 25 Aug. 2016 Some would say literacy is the ability to use information that is either printed or written to better oneself. My journey with literacy has been a part of my life and began before I even entered school. During my early days you would say I was a “repeater”. I repeated things that I would hear from my parents and people that were around me all the time. Some of them were good to say and some not so good to say. My parents always sat down and read to me.…

Literacy, the ability to read and write, is the foundation and general structure to learning as well as understanding any kind of information. In the words of Kofi Annan, “Literacy is…the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.” Being able to identify your literacy roots can be rather difficult, and incomprehensible. When seeking a single definition for literacy, one may find it to be nearly impossible as there is not just one, but many. The best way to tackle this uncertainty, is to first identify who your literacy sponsors are.…

I’d like to begin this reflective essay by airing out that I’ve never had the same affinity for reading and writing that I do for the sciences. Early in my education I struggled with them. However, during my high school experience I believe I’ve developed the requisite talents needed to be – at least somewhat – proficient in the aforementioned areas. With regards to reading, my largest problems have come from my tendency to lose focus, and most of my writing issues were caused by not knowing really what it means to write well.…

Literacy, as I see it, has an extremely broad definition that solely depends on the interpreter. Literacy is the ability to read and evaluate content in a unique way of thinking, along with the aptitude to write and reflect upon a story, topic, or a piece of art. Throughout my life my literacy has evolved and changed into what it is today, a freshman in college writing 101. I believe that my attitude towards literacy can be best described by the path of reading from my adolescent and my high school years. This is when I discovered my likes and dislikes about how I was raised to comprehend reading and how it has affected me growing up and turned me into the literate person that I am today.…

Under the Surface The word literacy can cause an overwhelming amount of stress in one's mind. Growing up, I have felt the pressure weigh on me even when I began to think of the word literacy. This thought of pressure and stress has caused me to become unmotivated when being motivated is the key element to reading and writing. I had it set in my mind at which there was no purpose behind literacy. I just saw it as lines smothered together and people would proclaim them as “literature”.…
