The meaning of literacy is that you can connect to something through proper reading and writing. This meaning does not remain the same throughout a person’s life. In today’s society being a literate person is extremely important. From getting a job or going to the grocery store, a person is required to be literate to some point, allowing them to communicate properly. Though all parts of my childhood and young adulthood have been connected to literacy and sometimes I didn’t realize the connection until later. From elementary school, high school, first attempt at college, and to my current job, I’ve realized how the meaning of literacy has changed through each stage of my life and how it has improved. Writing was now my main focus of literacy and seemed difficult for me and did not come with ease. Writing was never my strong suit and quite honest it still isn’t. With many hours of writing and re-writing papers for English classes, my writing slowly started to improve. Knowing now how much writing means and how much it’s used every day, I wish I would have worked harder and would not have procrastinated on my essays throughout high school. By not paying attention in class and always trying to go un-noticed, my writing slowed in improvement. Due to being afraid that someone was going to make fun of my writing, I flew under the radar, this caused me to slowly but steadily fall behind while others improved on their writing. Knowing that this fear of showing others my writing and receiving feedback had to be broken was always on my mind, but the longer I waited the harder it became to break. After starting my first college English class I realized what part of my fear was. It had to do with coming from a small town where I almost knew the birthday for every kid in my grade and that my English teacher had been best friends with my parents. In high school this had never crossed my mind that this could have been why I was afraid of sharing my work. Being afraid that if I made a grammar error or had a bad essay my teacher would tell my parents I was doing poor and class mates would tell my friends …show more content…
My plans were to move to Phoenix, AZ to attend Harley Davidson Technician School and the cost of school was outrages. About a month before I moved to Phoenix I heard of a job opening in San Angelo, TX and decided to apply, thinking it wouldn’t hurt to save money for a year before going to school. About two weeks before leaving for Phoenix I ended up getting the job and I’m still here almost three years later and have no doubt that this is my calling, also learning to be literate in many different ways. As I move up the ladder in my career I have noticed that the meaning of literacy is now understanding the different skills of communication with co-workers and computer programs. Working as an automation technician in the oil field, power plants, or any other automation field, I’ve have had to learn a completely different vocabulary than I’ve ever known. Along with this came new computer programs that I had never seen before. ABB TotalFlow G4 boards and Scada systems are examples of technology that I use every day and had to learn on the go and in the field. I have had little training, but picked up on the literacy and the new technology quite quick. The ABB TotalFlow systems measures gas flow rates and fluid rates coming out of the ground and then relays it onto the Scada system that makes these readings assessable to Pumpers and
