The Meaning Of Life In 'The Giver'

Life has no inherent meaning. It is unfair, dark, bright, and can be unpredictable. The meaning of life depends on who is experiencing it, and it changes through every step of their lives. The past is the past, and the future is yet to come. Why think of the future when one could be focusing on what is going on right now. Why push a “surprise” button when everything that happens is already full of surprises. If Jonas were to decide whether or not to press a “surprise” button, he would press it because he is thoughtful, curious, and apprehensive. Jonas has always caring towards his peers, friends, and family, which is why he was chosen as the new “Giver”. When it comes to pressing a button that says “surprise”, he would think deeply about it, but he would likely press it. He would think about his dark, yet perfect community. After pondering for a while, he comes up with “apprehensive”: “Apprehensive, Jonas decided, That’s what I am” (page number” The word apprehensive is defined as “uneasy or fearful about something that might happen” or “quick to learn or understand.” After finishing the novel, some will agree that Jonas is not only fearful of the death/release of Gabriel, but also quickly understood that as being “the Giver,” he must be able to endure pain. He quickly accepts that fact, which would have made him an excellent Receiver of Memory. Being apprehensive will influence Jonas to push the button, as he fears what the community will become if they continue to be what they are--fearful of what might become of him if he continues to stay in his society.
