The third line, "I'm breathing in the chemicals", is relevant to the poison and chlorine gases that were used in World War I. It could also be a metaphor of the Spanish flu that was very contagious. The first line of the hook, "I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus" can be connected to soldiers getting ready for war. It was a prison bus because war was no unicorns and rainbows. That line is followed by, "This is it, the apocalypse". When a soldier was in the war, or more specifically the trenches, they knew if they went up it would be the end. The line, "I feel it

Juxtaposition plays a huge part in the song as it places 2 completely opposite opinions side by side. P.F Slogan, using this feature, helps create a clear point of view in the listener’s head, showing how ridiculous certain decisions were. In the first verse he juxtaposes, “You’re old enough to kill” with “but not for voting” and ‘you don’t believe in war” with “then what’s that gun your totin.” Another example of juxtaposition in the song is “Hate you next door neighbour” with “but don’t forget to say grace” (4th Verse/Bridge). Metaphors such as “the world in a grave” (2nd verse) and “even the Jordan River has bodies floatin” (1st verse) causes the listener consider the implications this song was trying to display, a strong but balanced sense of fear, courage and indifference .…

Cambridge Dictionary defines protest song as a song that expresses disapproval, typically regarding politics. Song-writers have manipulated stylised literacy conventions since the 1960s to empower mass populations, return voice to those who have been marginalised, influence people’s cultural perspectives and widen social ideologies. The songs “White Fella Black Fella” (1985) by Warumpi Band and “I Am Austrlian” (1987) by The Seekers both contain the literacy techniques of: meaning, imagery, language, tone, and style which have been effectively mastered to clearly convey their parallel protest messages.…
