For example, an article from www.billofrightsinstitute.org reads, “The Court held that a school district violated students’ free speech rights when it singled out a form of symbolic speech – black armbands worn in protest of the Vietnam War – for prohibition, without proving the armbands would cause substantial disruption in class.” This shows that everyone gets to have and keep their rights as long as it isn’t harming or in this case, distracting others. Furthermore, because there was no proof of disruption in class, the armbands protesting the Vietnam War were not violating the First Amendment. This article relates to safety because it shows that it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it isn't harming others, freedom can never be taken away. Another example from this article is “The Court found that the school had not demonstrated that the armbands caused ‘a material and substantial interference with schoolwork or discipline and, rather, had acted merely to avoid the ‘discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint.’” This shows that safety is always in best interest of places but not everything is unsafe resulting in our freedom. For example, The Stamp Act was an act that required everything printed, to be taxed. A document states, “The British government coupled the reality of the Stamp Act with the Declaratory Act, a reaffirmation of its power to pass any laws over the colonists that it saw fit” This relates to my thesis by showing that these taxes were not good but resulted in government taking action for our freedom. Furthermore, the evidence here shows that if it weren't for this past historical event, we may still have the government enforcing taxes on things that otherwise wouldn't have any. Then the passage states, “ The issues raised by the stamp act festered for 10 years before giving rise to the Revolutionary War and, ultimately, American independence” This evidence shows that the historical event of the Stamp Act has eventually lead to our freedom and independence today. Moreover, without history, we wouldn't be able to learn from our mistakes and would not have freedom. This information not only shows the importance of history and taxes, but also how freedom doesn't come easy but with hard
