During the 1890s, also known as the “women’s era” women started to receive economic independence and more roles in everyday life. Laws were finally being passed that allowed women to control their own money and property, as well as being able to have separate wills from their husbands. Unfortunately however, the right to vote was still not given to women at this point but they were still fighting for it. “Under the banner of Home Protection, it (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) moved from demanding the prohibition of alcoholic beverages to a comprehensive program of economic and political reform, including the right to vote.” (Foner 663) During the Progressive era is when “feminism”, a word that was coined during this time, started to go into full swing. This time period brought about a “lyrical left”, “It’s members formed discussion clubs, attended experimental theaters, and published magazines. They confidently expected to preside over the emancipation of the human spirit from the prejudices of the nineteenth century.”(Foner 702-703) The Lyrical left is a great example of women’s rights because as stated in the book, “The lyrical left made freedom the key to its vision of society.”(Foner
