McGill pain questionnaire
Melzack (1975) developed the Mcgill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) in 1975 to assist in evaluating the subjective pain experiences of clients noting that different pain has unique qualities. It made up of 78 pain descriptions divided into three categories, sensory, affective and evaluate (Boyle, Boerresen & Jang, 2015; Melzack, 1975; Melzack, 2005). Malzack (1975) described the three main measures as the pain rating index, which is based on the value assigned to each word, the number of words choose and the present pain intensity which is a 1-5 intensity scale. Assistance in technique modification such as the changing the technique he currently uses to get up and down stairs and ladders to ensure that he remains safe in the work place. Terry would also benefit from management strategies such as pacing and energy conservation techniques. Terry has demonstrated that he has good management of the psychological aspects of his pain, he has no depression symptoms and has a sound understanding of why he is experiencing the pain. Terry continues to do social activities with friends and family and has maintained employment since the original injury.
It is important to note that occupational therapists do not work in isolation, and instead work with a range of health professionals to support individuals. Although this report has been solely from an occupational therapists’ perspective, for successful treatment and rehabilitation a range of health professionals are involved in the process and apply their specialist knowledge and practice to the program. Terry would benefit from program that utilizes a range of resources and health professionals such as a physiotherapy, podiatrist and GP to provide a holistic perspective to treatment and
