The Maze runner
By James Dashner
SETTING
The Maze Runner takes place in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future. The Maze, created by WICKED to sort of test teens on their abilities, is where the book is set. Surrounded by the maze at the very center is a place known as the Glade. The Glade is grassland with scattered forests inhabited by the Gladers. The Gladers consists of orphans, teenage boys, who have created a complex society with their own social classes based on their experiences in the Glade. Trust is very important especially when it comes to joining a new community, you need to find people that you can trust and that takes bravery to reach out to the community so you can be part of it. Trust was demonstrated throughout the whole book especially when Thomas asked the Gladers to follow him out of this wretched place. That also took bravery for the Gladers to join because there was like a fifty-fifty chance that Thomas’ plan will work. I think James Dashner easily showed the themes bravery and trust by incorporating it in everything they did. Living in the Glade was all based on trust because they had to trust one another that they will get their job done so that the community can run easily and efficiently. Bravery is more like the secondary theme because it was expressed not so much in the rising action (except by the runners of course) but in the falling action, they had to put their personal problems and conflicts aside and become brave enough to do whatever it takes to survive. Trust and bravery go hand in hand in The Maze
