The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, is a man in a very difficult situation regarding the safety of the African-American community, not only in his city, but all across the nation. On August 9th of this year, Michael Brown, a young black teenager living in Ferguson, Missouri, was shot and killed by a white police officer Darren Wilson, after shoplifting from a convenience store. This incident sent a shockwave throughout the community and began to draw attention to the racial discrimination all around the United States. Since then, stories have surfaced relating the mistreatment of the African-American peoples of our nation by white officers. Mike Brown, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin have become household names, and riots are breaking out throughout the country. Mayor de Blasio is simply attempting to bring not only the people of New York together, but all of the people in the United States. The question is, how is he to do it? Mayor de Blasio plans to have the Police Officers in his city attend a retraining, “The police will be taught strategies on how to control ego and adrenaline and urged to suppress profanity” says Matt Flegenheimer and J. David Goodman in an article describing some of the ways that the Mayor plans to connect the community. Mayor de Blasio is a happily married man with two children.
