The Mayans
It is very interesting and intriguing to study history and ancient civilization. Though we may not know all of the answers to different cultures in History, many artifacts from many different cultures were left behind to try to tell a story or leave a message for our society today. As I studied the history of the Mayan civilization, it was interesting to learn what they left behind to be recognized today. They were a group of Indian people that had a great history behind their culture. Throughout their civilization, they endured many struggles, from living situations to fighting for their cultural and legal rights, but throughout their struggles, they also created and left behind many things we use today and many amazing architectural …show more content…
By 500 BC most of these cities had many architectural structures built, which contained: houses, palaces, pyramids, and large temples. As we depend on the studies and the knowledge of our Historians that study these ancient civilizations, we learn form their studies that these structures that the Mayans worked hard to build, were very well built. These Mayan cities were made with perishable and non-perishable materials, such as: wood, jade, obsidian, ceramics, sculpted stone, and finely painted murals. We can also see that on the walls of these large temples they built, the Mayans used hieroglyphic writings on the walls and because of these writings, we can learn the type of life they lived and try to piece together their civilization story. The Mayans also built two types of pyramids. One of the pyramids that they built was meant to be climbed and was also used during human sacrifices, while the other one was to not be touched. Most of the gods were a form of nature or human-like. The other gods were believed to be the pass kings of the Mayan cities. They were also known for their calendars and astronomical structures. These were used for religious beliefs. They also used the pyramids for religious things as well. The Mayans were very similar to the Egyptians. Not only were the Mayan’s known for their incredible architectural monument building, but they were also known for their calendars and astronomical structures. In the beginning of 250 AD the period is defined as when the Mayas were building large monuments with long count dates. These calendars were used for religious beliefs and were similar to what we call prophecy, the foretelling of the future. The Mayan’s would study the sky and use their knowledge of astronomy and their mathematical skills and they created a calendar that has been accurate with events that have happened in our time. Some even believed at one point, that because the Mayan’s calendar ended with the year 2012, that that meant the world would end in 2012. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Empire had swept in and ruled over Central American and much sickness came to them. But before the Spanish took over, many of the Mayan cities were already abandon because of their migration for a better life. The stonemasons stopped making temples and buildings. Then the last city fell into the
