THE MATRIX AS A BIBLICAL STORY
The Matrix is a current movie and the Bible is a piece of inspired literature that has withstood scrutiny throughout the ages. The Matrix has many biblical themes and it parallels the Bible in numerous ways.
Let me briefly explain a simplified plot of The Matrix. The story centres around a computer-generated world that has been created to hide the truth from humans. In this world people are kept in slavery without their knowledge. This world is designed to simulate the peak of human civilization which had been destroyed by nuclear war. The majority of the world 's population is

In the Bible, Zion is the City of David; the city which God loved and showed His favour to.
• The scriptures say that we must die to ourselves and live unto Christ, because Christ died to give us life and victory. And so it is in the Matrix, Neo dies and from that point on, he hails the destruction of the Matrix.
• Neo had a choice of the red pill or the blue pill. We too have this choice. Do we want to know the Truth (the red pill) or do we just want to forget about it, wake up, and believe whatever we want to believe (the blue pill).
• The characters in the Matrix show their disgust at Cypher who wants to be returned to the Matrix. Morpheus even says to Neo at one point, “If you could return to the Matrix, would you want to?” This is a fitting description of how sickened God is when a believer returns to the world after being set free; “It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit . . .’” (2 Peter

The world we live in is also full of the deception Satan pulls over our eyes. It blinds us from the truth that there is a Kingdom far greater than this present world, and that that kingdom belongs to God who created us. That is why we must have faith and see with our spirits rather than our physical eyes. The Bible says that this world is our enemy and it caters to the sinful desires of men. We must overcome it. The Bible also says that the world and all visible things are temporary but the truth is eternal. This world is trying to hide the truth from us.
• The scriptures tell us that we do not fight against flesh and blood, but rather spiritual powers. This mirrors the part in the Matrix when it would have been pointless for Neo to fight those bound in the Matrix to destroy the Matrix. The scriptures tell us that we need to fight the spiritual powers that bind people and not the people themselves, so that the people can be set free.
So, the question is; “Does the Matrix preach the Gospel?” “Is it the Gospel on steroids?” It 's a matter of opinion, but remember, the rules (or laws) of The Matrix can be broken in the same way that the laws of the physical realm can be broken if we live in the spiritual realm. We can walk on water, raise the dead, heal the sick . . . only if we know the Chosen One,

The Matrix is a film that challenges the genuine and the module of a complicated, false cyber-based reality. Before the character Thomas Anderson, also known as Neo, finds said realism in the film, Morpheus, the leader of a group of rebels, presents him a very intriguing question, “Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?” (Wachowski).…

Christian Symbolism in The Matrix After doing some thorough research about The Matrix and it’s parallelistic comparison to Christianity, I discovered that there are many similarities and symbols liking the two stories, the first one being Neo and the comparison to Jesus. Neo is comparable to Jesus every since birth, where he literally born into the real world from the womblike incubator that he's existed in all his life. This reminded me of the “Virgin Birth” of the Messiah.…

The Matrix’s use of technology and philosophy was groundbreaking to the film industry. Although the film brought a new fascinating science fiction plot never seen before, it is clear the film follows the hero’s journey. The Matrix uses biblical references and perception to bring new ideas, resulting in the evolution of the hero’s journey into a more modern version. To understand Neo’s journey in The Matrix one must understand how the biblical references strengthen the hero’s journey.…

The universe created by this film has an all out war, clearly defined between Man and Machine. But that's not all, this movie shows that we are more like machines than we think and that they are more like us. Many times it is shown that the humans who have been released from the Matrix are as relentlessly driven as the machines that held them captive. Morpheus faith in Neo and the prophecy is unwavering and unquestioning. In almost all situations Neo has a robotic like calm surrounding him.…

In “The Matrix,” Neo makes the choice between the red (truth) pill and the blue (ignorance) pill. In the film Neo choses to know the truth because of all the crazy things he had recently seen, all the questions that were burning in his mind, and the limited time he had to choose. Although Neo chose to know the truth, there are many reasons one could choose either. Neo chooses the red pill because he has felt, and seen, that there was something “off” about his life.…

With the passage of time, technology is taking over our lives and human beings are becoming increasingly dependent on it. As Morpheus, the fictional character from The Matrix eloquently puts it “It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.” The inability to recall a friend’s contact information without the aid of our smartphone’s contact list is an innocuous example of human reliance on technology. However, this is indicative of a bigger problem. The dwindling emphasis on honing working memory and exercising basic mental skills, due to the easy accessibility of gadgets that can perform these tasks, impacts our learning and cognition.…

Unlike those who have “been held captive by him to do his will”, we have escaped “from the snare of the devil” and have an immense job do in the sense that not only should we continue reinforcing our worldview, but find ways to encourage others to adopt our perspective (2 Timothy 2:26, New American Standard Bible). In all honesty, I believe that one can only find the meaning of life through being born again. The Bible makes it very plain that “the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14, King James…

After reading many books from some of greatest philosophers such as Descartes, Plato, Chuang Tzu, Thich Nhat Hanh, Wachowski Brothers the director of the Matrix and so forth, my mind is wondering with one big question that has been always rotating above my head during my philosophy and film class. That one big question is to define real, how do we define real? Is it merely real that we want to know about? How about the meaning of a true real? How do we know that we are really being in this world, sitting and reading my essay?…

When Morpheus first shows Neo the real world he says to him, “Welcome to the desert of the real.” The world as Neo knows it does not exist and is merely a construction by machines. Life inside the Matrix is similar to that of the end of the 20th century yet it is a computer generated dream world built to keep humans under control in order to change them into energy. While connected to the Matrix humans are none the wiser about the fact that what they perceive to be reality is actually just a façade. The real world, the world outside the Matrix, on the other hand is a barren wasteland, a dead earth with no sun and thus no natural life apart from the a small minority of humans that have been disconnected.…

The Matrix is an action science fiction film that representationally expresses the controversy between a parallel universe and the reality. I am going to be using one of the four stylistic controls, mise-en-scène, which is used to convey underlying messages and hidden symbols. I will do that by looking at the lighting and the importance of reflective surfaces and what they represent. I will therefore analyze a specific sequence in the movie, and discuss the fundamental aspects to show how it links with the film as a whole.…

In the Allegory of The Cave, Plato depicts a cave where prisoners are strapped into chairs facing a wall. There is a fire burning behind them, and in front of the fire there are puppets which throw shadows on the wall. The shadows on the wall are the prisoners reality, and they have no desire to leave because they know nothing better. If a prisoner were to escape from the chair, he would see the fire and it would hurt his eyes. So he would turn back to the shadows that are easy for him to look at.…

The Biblical Metanarrative A metanarrative is a story about stories of historical meaning, experience, or knowledge, which offers a society legitimation through the anticipated completion of a master idea. Though people may categorize the metanarrative of the Bible differently, there are four major parts that stand out as someone reads through the Bible. There will be some repetition of concepts as each one is discussed because each part is so closely related. The first concept will build the foundation for which the following three are built.…

In John Berger’s article, “Ways of Seeing,” he discusses how a painting can be a misleading tool for the brain because many do not understand the meaning behind the painting. The paintings mess around with our brains in the form of telling us lies. In the movie, The Matrix, written by Larry and Andy Wachowski, Neo, the main character, is awaken from his long eternity sleep and realizes he has been living a lie. Throughout the film you are able to see the form of mystification form the Oracle, a character that knows everything in the film, and on Morpheus, the leader of the humans. Throughout the movie, the Matrix releases “agents” (art historians) to go after the humans.…

There is no Spoon The debate between idealism and materialism is an interesting aspect of philosophy and this debate has been visualised in many movies such as The Wachowski Brothers’ The Matrix (1999). The movie questions reality and an argument that can be identified from the movie is that the mind is the only thing that exists; the body and all things material, are illusions of the mind and therefore their existence can be questioned.…
