“The Rite of Spring” was a piece which caused Igor Stravinsky to go down in history as someone who challenged the norms of music and who changed music traditions forever. As you will see further on in my essay Stravinsky's innovative ideas were not initially loved and respected but instead frowned upon and hated.
I can personally relate to some concepts within Stravinsky's performance as I am a dancer and have performed pieces by Breandán De Gallaí such as “The Rite of Spring”.De Gallaí is known as a choreographer who bends the norms and creates new genres within the dance community and he is seen as being at the forefront of contemporary Irish Dance.
“The Rite of Spring” was the first of many new and innovative dance numbers De Gallaí choreographed and the response to it was similar to the public’s reaction to Stravinsky's first performance in Paris. I will discuss this separate to the main bulk of my essay.

In 1909, he began his work and composition for the Ballets Russes and its founder Sergei Diaghilev. This job begun the birth of Stravinsky's new set of works including “Firebird” and “The Rite of Spring”. The first performance of “The Right of Spring” was in Paris on the 29th of May 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs- Elysées (which is what this essay's main focus is on and I will discuss in more detail further on in this essay). After this collaboration with Sergei Diaghilev Stravinsky became a household
