The style of gothic fiction places heavy emphasis on atmosphere, using setting and diction to build suspense and a sense of unease in the reader. Common subject matter includes the supernatural, family curses, mystery and madness. (Hogle 24)
"The Masque of the Red Death" is written in the gothic style as it is a story of plague, terror and death. This story is a prime example of Poe 's gothic horror fiction. Poe evokes a dark and frightening mood in the story that focuses on images of blood and death. The personification of the 'Red Death ' lends an element of the supernatural. This story illustrates Poe 's literary philosophy as it is seen by Bryant: "In ‘The Masque of the Red Death,’ powerful imagery and an illusive narrative voice are tightly woven into a macabre tale of horror with insight into the human condition." (Bryant 1)

As a gothic writer, Edgar Allan Poe created horror using gloom as his weapon.
