The Masque Of The Red Death Clock Analysis

Death is not something you can escape, no matter what life throws at you. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Prospero thought that just because he was rich, he could lock himself away in his palace and escape the red death, he was wrong. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” Poe implies the colors of the room as the clock, the stop-start movement and the placement of the clock. The first way that Poe uses the clock as a symbol is through the colors of it. When Poe is explaining the clock, he uses the colors of the rooms to represent the clock. When this was happening, Poe wrote in the story this, “The blackness of the sable drapery appalls” ( Poe par. 9). It shows how the curtains of the black room, keeps it pitch black so you can barely see the clock in the room. The placement of the clock was a huge thing because the clock was placed in the black room because no one will ever go in there. According to Cesrowsky, the placement of the clock was a huge deal in the story. Cersowsky writes, “There is also a big clock standing at an exposed place that draws everybody under its spell” (Cersowsky). He highlights that Poe places the clock in an exposed area because he wants them to notice it and be attracted to the clock. The clock placement meant a lot to the story because it drew the people in and got their attention.
