Gothic Horror Elements in Edgar Allen Poe’s Work When the Gothic Horror era began in the 18th century, it puzzled a lot of humans. When the Romantic era began, there were many Gothic romance-based novels published. The basic concepts are the horror, terrorizing environment, elements of the supernatural, and deaths. There are tons of gothic horror elements incorporated into stories. A gothic horror novelist, Edgar Allen Poe, incorporated more than one in all of his gothic horror novellas. In one of his works, “The Masque of the Red Death” is about how a ‘plague’ was consuming a whole country. When the ebony clock rang, it made everyone turn pale and freeze. Poe mentioned, “Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang…and there was a brief disconcert of the whole gay company... while the chimes of the clock yet rang, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale” (2). Since the ebony clock was so monotonous, it created an eerie presence that made everyone pale, it’s quite mysterious because an ebony clock shouldn't make anyone scared. Moreover, Poe’s short story had supernatural elements as well. The mysterious figure, or, “The Red Death”, portrayed Death. He had eliminated thousands of humans without even using a weapon. After the Red Death had massacred everyone in the whole country, Poe elaborated, “ He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall...and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all” (6).
