In ancient China, the time period it was written in, it was okay because people used to tend to do that in order, like it's shown in the story, to keep a promise. The story continues and the mason and his new wife are living happily. The mason loves his wife so dearly that he never leaves her side so he won't bear being without her. She suggests that they paint a picture of her in order for him to keep her with him at all times and work at the same time. One day, the picture he keeps flew out of his hands and into the hands of the emperor. The emperor fell in love with the beauty in the picture and demanded the head eunuch to find her so he can marry her. When found, the wife comforts her husband and tells him that she will see him in three years with a six feet long onion and a dress made of feathers. The wife arrives at the palace, her face became hard as stone, she never smiled, and whenever the emperor came to visit she pretended to be ill. His love for her faded.
