With decades of living under the unrelenting and brutal control of a multitude of drug cartels, the people of Michoacan, a state in southwestern Mexico, enthusiastically welcomed the unlawful organization of the vigilante, self-defense group known as the Autodefensas. Founded in 2013 and headed by Dr. José Manuel Mireles, the Autodefensas were made up of local men in the rural state who shared one common goal: reclamation of the towns that were being run by the Knights Templar, a violent drug cartel that had been terrorizing the state since the beginning of the decade -replacing the cartel formerly in power, La Familia Michoacana (Archibold). The absence of protection from the cartel by the government prompted immediate acceptance and gratitude for the formation of the Autodefensas. However, the rapid growth and lack of regulation established the…
In today's society, people love and praise stories about a hero saving the day and always doing good and what is right. Attributes of these so called heroes can be seen in specific stories such as Sir Gawain and Beowulf. In the tales of Sir Gawain, he is a knight of the famous King Arthur and is taking up the task to defend the king and go on wild and deadly adventures (Bulfinch). He ends up failing his king by trying to save his own life and is forgiven by Arthur. Beowulf is the manly man that we all think of.…

Just as I was about to make my daily rounds in Heorot, I was met at my door with the horrible news that it had happen again.…
The two cultures I chose to compare heroic values for are the ancient stories of Gilgamesh and Beowulf. Although they possess many similar heroic characteristics they also differ greatly. Beowulf is often referred to as the first important work of literature in English, even though it was written in Old English. The world that Beowulf depicts and the heroic code of honor that defines much of the story is a relic of pre–Anglo-Saxon culture. The hero of The Epic of Gilgamesh was an actual historical figure, a king who reigned over the Sumerian city-state of Uruk around 2700 B.C.…
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen of the jury. We present to you today Grendel, a creature accused of crimes of monstrosity. Through the display of evidence and facts, we will validate our allegation and prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Grendel is absolutely who he is accused to be. For the past twelve years, Grendel has tormented the Danes with terror as he demolished their meadhall and cruelly killed their men.…
The story of Kiowa’s death has been repeated three times. Each of the stories is from a different perspective. Beowulf, an epic poem composed around 750 AD (Greenblatt 26), is a story of a Dane named Beowulf and his astonishing feats of bravery and sacrifice. Beowulf’s actions showcase his strength, sacrifice, honor, faultlessness, courage, compassion, and seemingly inborn, infallible behavior. Even onlookers termed him “stout of heart” (Beowulf 338), “noble” (314), and “formidable” (370). Beowulf is a quintessential hero who lived a for the good of others and died for the good of others. The moral throughout the story of Beowulf is that self-sacrifice is an overt trait of the classic hero figure.…
