Do you think that being trapped on a planet all by yourself is frightening? In the book, “The Martian” , written by Andy Weir, Mark Watney an astronaut who majors in botany, gets stranded on Mars alone. While on a mission on Mars, a strong dust storm comes unexpectedly and the crew has to evacuate immediately in order to survive. They make there way to the MAV so they can abort but in the meantime an antenna flies off of it and hits Mark. He is hit and his pushed out of reach, so the crew must leave without him. Thinking that Mark is dead, the crew leaves in order to survive, but what they don’t know is that he is alive. Now, Mark Watney has to survive on the red planet that can’t grow anything, has no water and is unpredictable. Will his …show more content…
Throughout the whole trip on Mars, Watney remained happy (most of the time) and never got down on himself even if he was in the worst situations. For example, in the book when one of the HAB ( the house that NASA sent for the crew to live in) walls gets blown up, Mark doesn’t get upset instead he makes a joke about it when he is in the process of fixing it. “ ‘Yes, of course duct tape works… Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped.’” (220) This text evidence is just one example of how Mark adds humor to tough situation. His humorous personality helped him to survive on the red planet of Mars because Mark could always crack a joke even in the worst …show more content…
Throughout the story Mark comes across many extraordinary problems that he has to fix in order to stay alive. He thinks quickly and is determined to get the problem solved no matter what. As Mark says in the movie, “‘You solve one problem and you solve the next one, and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home.’” He solves many problems so he can achieve his goals of going home. One of his biggest problems is getting enough food to stay on Mars for about 4 years. The red planet has no water , plant growth, or bacteria, so Mark has to use his science skills to get plants to grow with what he has. Mark uses his poop to create bacteria in the dry , dusty soil and he creates water to grow potatoes for his food. “They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially ‘colonized’ it. So technically, I colonized Mars.” (147) This quote also shows that he is an intelligent problem solver because he conquered the impossible. In conclusion, even though Mark got stranded on Mars for over 400 SOL’s ( Mar’s Days) his character traits help him throughout his fight to come home. Mark’s humorous personality, problem solving skills and coolheadedness might have just saved him from dying on Mars

Mccandless, the main character, is affected by extreme environmental surroundings, because his thinking shifts from being brave to feeling morally guilty . Dreams Deferred Dreams, hopes, and aspirations are things that people develop during any time period of their lives, which can consist of a long term or short term goal wanting to be completed. In my own words. Deferred means altered or not happening the way you want it to. When you put the two words “dreams’ and ‘deferred” together it can mean that something gets in the way of plans you wanted to happen and dreams you had high hopes for.
