The movie, The Martian, is a science fiction film based on a novel of the same name, published by Andy Weir. The feature film is focused around the planet Mars. Primarily, the Acidalia Planitia, a plain on the red planet. In the movie, this plain is the landing site for the NASA space crew, Ares III. Beginning on sol (day) 18 of their 31 sol mission, Ares III is shown inspecting the differences in soil of various areas when a severe emergency warning pops up on the computer in the HAB, or the Habitation Module (living quarters) where Johanssen, the system operator of the six man team, passes on the urgent message. The emergency refers to the dust storm that looms close by. As the threat continues to brew, becoming more intense, the crew agrees …show more content…
After awakening, Watney surveys his surroundings and recognizes his complete desertion. He enters the HAB, completes surgery on his wound, and creates a video entry. Watney introduces his videos for the purpose of tracking his journey and time on Mars for future reference and discovery, in preparation for his potential death. In his first video, Watney addresses his many concerns about whether or not he could survive. He commences his trek for survival by scouring for any useful belongings left behind by his crew members, monitoring the frequent storms, and rationing his food. As another video entry is created, Watney finds that he has enough food to survive for 400 sols, meaning he must grow three years worth of food on a planet where nothing grows. Watney uses his botanist ‘powers’ to cultivate potatoes. He utilizes soil from Mars, human waste, and freeze dried potatoes saved for the Thanksgiving meal to start the process. Before the production can begin however, he must create water. When his first attempt fails because he did not account for the exhalation of his oxygen into the calculations, the second try succeeds. On Sol 54, 36 days into his desolation, green leaves begin popping through the soil, while simultaneously on Earth, NASA holds a funeral for Mark Watney, contributing it to the legacy he …show more content…
He has grown 400 healthy Martain-grown potato plants. He now redirects his focus on making contact with NASA. As Watney starts to search for a communication method, Kapoor suspects Watney and flies out to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Watney finds The Pathfinder and Kapoor’s assumptions are confirmed. However, the Pathfinder lost connection in 1997 and Watney must repair it. Kapoor tries to determine Watney’s chances for success in reviving it. Watney successfully acquires a signal to Earth and communication between the planets commences through Hexadecimals. With more complex conversations arising, NASA sends instructions on how to hack the Rover through code so that it can talk to Pathfinder, linking it to its broadcasting frequency, expanding communication. NASA explains the situation to Watney through this new method of communication. Watney asks questions about how the crew is doing with the knowledge of his survival. NASA is forced to tell him of their decision to not tell the crew, allowing them to concentrate on their mission without distraction. Watney is upset. An ever-present force, Mitch Henderson, Hermes Flight Director continues to urge Sanders to tell the crew. Sanders finally obliges. The Hermes, 4 months since Mars departure, receive a message from Henderson, announcing the news that Mark Watney is alive and healthy. The crew is in

I look forward to hearing your first transmission from the surface of Mars,” (Stephenson 482). Of course, as stated before, her ‘plan’ would lead to the deaths of over ninety-five percent of all of humanity, and that was thanks to two flaws in her plan. One flaw, of course, was that JBF did not understand science. She proposed that the trip to Mars would not take any time at all, and thus the group of people going to Mars did not need a sustainable food source. Instead, she took what see had stolen from the Cloud Ark and distributed it among her fellow crazy people who thought going to Mars with a scientifically uneducated POTUS was a fantastic idea.…

When he travels at night he can’t see any of the landmarks like the craters to help him know the direction he is going so he uses Phobos and Deimos to help him travel. “Mars doesn’t have a magnetic field. So I navigate by Phobos. It whips around Mars so fast it actually rises and sets twice a day, running west to east.…

It is just funny that one of the people from NASA just wonders what Mark Watney is thinking at the moment and Watney just happens to be thinking about a joke. Another example would be when Mark was posing for a picture: “I [Mark] gave the camera a thumbs-up to go along with my note which said, Ayyyyyy! Blame the seventies TV. ‘I asked for a picture, and I get the Fonz?’ Annie [in charge of the public support for rescuing Mark] asked, admonishing Venkat.…

At one point in the story line, right after NASA figures out he’s alive and start to plan out a way to rescue him, Watney logs: “Even if I find a way to tell NASA I’m alive, there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to save me” (Weir 65). At this time in the book, the reader knows that NASA has discovered that Watney is alive, but Watney thinks that they still presume him to be a dead man. At another point in the plot, both the reader and NASA know that Watney is headed into a storm, but Watney is, yet again, oblivious. “There was a haze in the air. It’s not uncommon; Mars has weather and wind and dust, after all.…
