The Marshmallow Test

Decent Essays
The marshmallow test is a test where a kid at the age of 4,5 or 6 is placed in a room. The kid is supposed to wait in the room for a certain amount of time. They get a treat placed in front of them. If they wait there without eating it they get another treat and the get to eat both. Most kids ate the treat before the time limit was over. One third on the kids didn't eat the marshmallow and the other two thirds ate the marshmallow. The point of this test is to see if the kid has self discipline. One hundred percent of the kids that didn't eat the marshmallow were successful. The other were mostly not successful but some of them were. The person that made the tests wanted to figure out a way to teach a person from any age self discipline.

For our diffusion experiment our group decided to work with salt water and gummy bears. Our experiment tested the weight of the gummy bears per salt dilutions. Our tests included 1g 2.5g 5g, 1.5g, and 10g of salt diluted with water. We knew that the higher the concentration of salt diluted into the water the heavier the diffused gummy bear would be, therefore we measure weight as our numerical data. My hypothesis was that the 10g dilution of salt would have the gummy bear with the largest mass.…

At the beginning of this experiment, the experimenter asks the child to separate the cards into a white and black stack. After the child has done so, the experimenter asks the child to now separate the cards depending on the shape that is on the card: heart or a star. The child will tend to get less correctly when asked to stack the cards depending on their shape. This was very interesting because it goes to show that children tend to perseverate, which means that they tend to get stuck to thinking about the rules that they were initially exposed to. They do not chose to ignore the second set of rules; it is just too much for them to actually remember.…

Apparently, ever since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, the amount of students who experienced mass shootings increased, according to a Washington post analysis. As alluded to in her book, A Disease Called Childhood, in chapter seven, entitled “Let Food be Thy Medicine”, Marilyn Wedge claims that though there are some legitimate diagnoses of ADHD that are in need of attention and possibly medication, a child’s diet may be a sizable factor of their behavior. Wedge cites John E. Huxsahl from Mayo Clinic, using his article on processed foods to help her claim that food consumption can have a relation to ADHD. I agree with Wedge’s argument on multiple occasions that I will refer to throughout this essay; including personal experiences, experiments, and how other countries tackle additives in food. When my brother, Konnor, was younger, he was diagnosed with multiple behavioral disorders due to his inability…
