The Pros And Cons Of Civil Unions

I went to a civil unions ceremony for a gay friend back in 2012 when civil unions were made legal. The State of Hawaii passed a bill 232 to “ recognize and establish the status of civil unions in Hawaii” (Hawaii Vital Records, 2011, para 1). They had wanted to be married, but laws in the United States and Hawaii didn’t allow that to happen. At the time, certain states allowed people to have civil unions, which were supposed to be equal in theory, but it wasn’t the same as traditional marriage. Today, Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender community can marry someone else legally, but It’s still debated around this country in congress, state and local meetings, coffee shops, and another place where people gather to chat. These types of unions depending on where you live grant you similar rights as being married, but you couldn’t legally call your other half your husband or wife like in traditional marriage (Hawaii Vital Record, 2012). It was basically similar to marriage but not equal. It made people second-class citizens in their own country. Secondly, gay and lesbian couples fought for benefits that come with being married. They weren’t allowed to make decisions for their spouse or allow them on their health insurance plans because they weren’t family. Heterosexual couples were allowed to add their husband or wives on their plans. Lastly, they wanted to be seen a legal and not have any more challenges to their status as a married couple. People are trying to find a way to go around the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage. Conservatives, like Ted Cruz, are trying to get congress and other people to outlaw this decision. They feel their liberty is being oppressed (Lerner, 2015, para 2). I think it 's because they won’t be able to say hateful things about gay couples.
