During adolecensce, the brain is growing and kind of pruning itself for adulthood. But, what makes a person Mature? In the article, The Marks of Maturity, Tim Elmore focuses on seven distinct traits a person needs to have to be considered mature. The traits he mentioned were humility, unshaken by flattery, wisdom, commitment, priority, character and gratitude. Because the brain is still molding itself in preparation for adulthood, teens are also learning about being an adult. Their leaders and teachers have been trying to mold teens into what they consider a mature young adult. To be humble includes being grateful for even the littlest things. All parents know that children can be ungrateful even to the point that they seem stuck up. This adds the immaturity found in children. "Immature children presume they deserve everything good that happens to them." Elmore stated,"Mature people see the big picture and realize how good they have it, compared to most of the world's population." In the Marks of Maturity, it states, "They don't presume they have all the answers. The wiser they get the more they realize they need more wisdom. They're not ashamed of seeking counsel from adults (teachers, parents, coaches) or from other sources. Only the wise seek wisdom." The wise are grateful, …show more content…
Many people have different views on how to raise children but overall, the definition of a mature person is as said above. They have character, priority, wisdom, gratitude, humility, commitment and are not shaken by flattery. All of these things seem complicated and hard to teach but the power of example is the best way to raise mature young adults. Tim Elmore quotes Susan Peters, "Children have a much better chance of growing up if their parents have done so first." Don't patronize them, just show them through example how to act as a mature adult and help them everyday to improve themselves and sooner than later they will grow to be a mature and happy
