Helvetica is an internationally known, widely used sans serif typeface developed by Swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger (1910-1980) and co-developed by Eduard Hoffman at the Haas type foundry in Munchenstein, Switzerland owned by Linotype. The steadily popular typeface was officially released in 1957 under the name ‘Die Neue Haas Grotesk’. The original name was kept until 1960, and was changed to Helvetica (Latin for Swiss) by a marketing manager within the company due to expressing their successful plans to market the font internationally, and to do so they requested a name change to make it more appealing towards an international market. Trendy neo-grotesque designs, realist designs, modernism and other German and Swiss typefaces were also major influences in the design process. It is both a transitional and a modern font, and some designers say it is a contemporary version of Akzidenz-Grotesk.

The international use of Helvetica began in the 1960’s, when it was renamed and marketed internationally. From the beginning of its popularity, it has been applied to several types of design and it became the default typeface for any company wishing to push a dynamic image.

Examples of use in the 1960’s include Kodak Graphic Arts 2nd Edition, published in 1960, 8 ½ Movie Poster in 1963, 1960’s perpetual calendar in 1965, Meet the Finns by Mario de Biasi in 1966, Crate & Barrel Logo in 1967 (the logo is still in use today) and Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook in

Over the past century, the rate of modernization has exponentially increased. From technological innovation to cultural shifts, the collective human experience has rapidly transformed. As a medium of expression, cinema has responded effectively to these changes by documenting the impacts of the evolving modern world. Film scholar Miriam Hansen’s modernity theory is manifested in creative innovations that visually showcase new technologies and respond to societal attitudes of the times. While Ozu’s That Night’s Wife and Capra’s Why We Fight incorporate the “effects of modernity” by utilizing industrial innovations in electrical lighting and film, Capra’s…

The word Hex is one that has permeated much of common literature and culture often being seen as a word that detonates an evil spell or some sort of curse upon the recipient. Curse and hex are two words that are frequently misused or confused together within the context of Paganism. However, after researching the word hex, I have found that a hex spell isn't necessarily a spell designed with evil intent. What a hex essentially is revolves around manipulation of somebody else's will. This manipulation is not necessarily good or bad but could be either depending on the spell and the intention behind it.…

My expectations for English 394, Business Writing, differ from previous summer classes I have taken. Personally, I have never taken a full online class, so I am a bit uncertain on the new challenges this will bring. Especially, when it comes to communicating with the instructor can be limited as opposed to taking a regular class. However, the mandatory conference calls and weekly updates should extensively help with what is to be expected in throughout the course. I am also a bit skeptical on the final project assignment being dependent upon the use of WordPress.…

OpDoc and Documentary Filmmaking Assessment: In looking at all ten of these OpDocs, it is clear that each filmmaker is intent on depicting the people and places featured in a specific way, but each uses different techniques to achieve a similar goal. OpDocs are different than general documentaries because they focus in on getting the audience to feel a specific way about a given issue. Although other forms of documentary filmmaking may also do that, OpDocs seem to zone in on smaller details that tell the story in a short and impactful way. A common theme in all 10 OpDocs is that the filmmakers often switched between written information popping up on the screen and the people featured telling their stories through dialogue.…

For this writing workshop, I will use three critical approaches to discuss the film, The Bicycle Thieves (De Sica, 1948). Of the six approaches, I chose the “National Cinemas”, “Auteur”, and “Ideology” approaches. The “National Cinemas” approach to analyzing film takes into account the culture and national characteristics that influence how a narrative is filmed. To understand and fully appreciate a film, one must understand the historical and cultural conditions that surround it. The writer must distinguish what makes a particular film different from those of another culture from the same time period (Corrigan, 2015).…
