The Marine Biome

Decent Essays
Oh my gosh look over there it’s a whale! Wait no look over there it’s a dolphin! Wow what an extraordinary biome the marine biome! The marine biome is the biggest biome in the world. In fact, it covers about 75% of the world. Amazing right? This biome is said to have the biggest biological diversity due to the size and how deep a marine biome can be. A marine biome can come in three forms: estuaries, oceans, and coral reefs.
Speaking of oceans there are five main oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Artic. The ocean’s water is very salty making it unsafe for drinking. It is also divided up into five layers: The Epipelagic zone (Sunlight zone, Mesopelagic zone (Twilight zone), Bathypelagic zone (Midnight zone), Abyssopelagic zone

Many American families believe that SeaWorld is the best family vacation spot with its many parks all over the country. A typical visit to SeaWorld includes petting dolphins, visiting the aquarium, and being splashed by a majestic Orca. While SeaWorld may seem family-friendly, it definitely is not animal friendly. The tourist attraction, also known as SeaWorld, tortures its animals by ripping them from their homes and families, placing them in pools that might as well be bathtubs. Although families enjoy taking a trip to SeaWorld, they would feel a lot differently if they knew about the constant pain and torture inflicted on SeaWorld’s animals.…

Large decreases in the algae population will most likely impact the bay ecosystem by killing off organisms and plants. Algae is a crucial plant in the Chesapeake Bay that needs to steadily grow to keep the animal population consistent. Bay grass, also known as underwater grass, grows in the superficial areas of the Chesapeake Bay. It is crucial to the environment because it absorbs extra nutrients, shelters small fish, and keeps the water looking less murky. Like Algae, Bay grass provides oxygen, food, and nutrients and is an important plant in this ecosystem.…

Verona Park has always been an interesting wilderness park to explore in the Essex County area. Although there are other parks such as Brookdale Park, Branch Brook Park, South Mountain Reservation, and Eagle Rock Reservation, I do not find them as interesting as Verona Park. During the winter, there are no activities for the families to do, besides walk around the park. But during the warmer weather months, they offer various types of activities, such as paddle boating, tennis courts, a playground and a Children’s garden. This ecosystem has beautiful scenery for everyone to enjoy.…

SeaWorld offers an opportunity to watch and interact with animals that live in the ocean such as orcas, beluga whales, dolphins, turtles, fish, sharks, and otters. Although, in the eyes of many, SeaWorld is corrupt when it comes down to whales killing their trainers, orcas having a short life expectancy, and marine life being held captive. Killer whales have been the topic of discussion when it comes to whether or not they are violent. There have been some headlines about trainers getting killed by killer whales at SeaWorld.…

Before analyzing any situation, one must begin at the very root of the cause in hopes understanding it better. Sea World is surprisingly not the first establishment that decided to economically strive through the exploitation of animals. Orca whales that were captured and delivered to their lifelong home in SeaWorld amusement parks went from swimming up to 100 miles a day to being put in tanks that are much too small for them. The average size of an orca whale can reach up to 20-26 feet long and can weigh as much as 22,000 pounds. The size of the orca whales in comparison to the tanks they live in at SeaWorld are said to be in comparison to a “bathtub.”…

The marine environment at Lorde Howe Island was a significant factor for World Heritage Listing in 1982. The island has a combination of temperate and tropical marine species, including coral reef in the near intact condition of the Island waters. During winter, ocean currents at 17 degrees’ surround Lord Howe Island and larvae of many organisms from cool southern parts of Australia are transported to the Island. During summer, the warm East Australian Current sweeps down from the Great Barrier Reef, bringing larvae of tropical marine creatures to the Island. Some of these larvae settle down and contribute to the rich marine community of the Island waters.…

Coral Reefs One of the world’s most species rich and bio diverse ecosystems are the tropical coral reefs. Emmysarus, a staff writer/ blogger for Scribol stated in their article “The World’s Most Endangered Ecosystems: Coral Reefs, “Unfortunately, areas which are home to the richest biodiversity often suffer from the greatest amount of damage and disruption”. These “rainforests of the sea” are home to thousands of species of fish and invertebrates that live among the hundreds of different and diverse kinds of these living builders. Coral reefs also provide multiple ecosystem services including wave and storm protection, and provide us with food and medicine.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…
