The problem that I have chosen to tackle is the fraudulent manipulation of religion and religious values among the illiterate population in India by self acclaimed “god men (and women)” and other “godly” people. These words usually represent people who either have godly powers or can talk to God. They are often referred to as ‘baba’, ‘maharaj’, ‘pandit’, etc. I have chosen Krishna and Dante to deal with this problem. Since the majority of the population in India follows the religion that is closely based on the Bhagavad Gita, I think Krishna not only has the right to say something, but also would be able to solve this problem. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna deals with a lot of themes. Of interest, however, are the themes that deal with the importance of knowledge and equality which will contribute to the process of attaining Moksha. I have chosen Dante for his strong sense of justice and punishment. This decision might also have been affected by my desire to punish the people who practice religion in a way that would be deemed wrong by Krishna and me. It may be argued that according to Dante, every religion except Christianity is wrong or every non Christian is deemed to go to Hell. But, this paper assumes that Dante is willing to treat Hinduism equally and make his decision whether the fraudulent people in question deserve hell or not.
