In the Odysseus’s life and experiences that he had to face relate to the tough experiences I and other teenagers have went through. Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus had to choose really tough decisions just like me. Though he was on a journey to be re-united to the love of his life, and his son, and I am on my journey of life. Also, Odysseus’s problems might be a little more complicated than what i face, they still are hard to deal with. When I was born…
Odysseus tricks the cyclops and escapes. Out of anger, the cyclops…
First, Odysseus in the episode “The Cyclops”, Odysseus while trying to escape Polyphemus’s cave had told Polyphemus that his name was nohbdy, manipulating him to later say”’Nohbdy, Nohbdy's tricked me. ’”(409) when telling Polyphemus that his name was nohbdy, he had manipulated Polyphemus and used the cyclopes ignorance to his advantage. By doing this you see the indirect characterization that odysseus is a manipulative character. Moreover, Odysseus is using manipulation to convince the king that he is wise and sensitive. Within the episode of “I Am Laertes Son”, Odysseus is retelling the story of how he ended up on the king's island, utilizing manipulation.…
One of the best relationships you have are the ones at home with your family. These relationships you can never forget and can last a lifetime. In the book The Odyssey, Odysseus struggles for ten years to come home to his family after the Trojan War. At home, in Ithaca, he has a wife, Penelope, and a son, Telemachus that he loves dearly. He is always eager to find some way to get closer and closer to his home.…
Odysseus tries to negotiate with the cyclops, reminding him that they are under the protection of Zeus. The cyclops fears no God and leaves them trapped. Odysseus needs a plan to kill this monstrous beast. He picks up a massive staff of wood in the cave and starts whittling. After the cyclops has dinner, Odysseus approaches it and tells him his name is Nobody.…
Throughout the Odyssey, characters who follow the virtue of intelligence over strength are rewarded, while those who do not are disciplined. Odysseus uses his best talent to take down a Cyclops. Odysseus and his men go into a cave because they are curious what lives in it and soon find out a human eating Cyclops lives there! Instead of attacking the Cyclops right away, Odysseus decides to trick the Cyclops so when they attack him it won’t bring attention to the other Cyclops. First Odysseus tells the Cyclops that is name is “Nohbdy”(Nobody).…
Odysseus exhibits an impressive level of intelligence, beyond any mortal man, to the capacity of the gods just like when he uses his wits to his advantage during his huge meddle with the Cyclops, Polyphemos, “‘Cyclops, here, have a drink after that jolly meal of mans-mutton!’” (113). In this passage, Odysseus’ intelligence is depicted when he fools Polyphemos into getting drunk allowing him to proceed with his scheme in order to escape with his men. He uses Polyphemos’ naiveness to his advantage so he can grapple his way out of the cave to resume his odyssey back to Ithaca. Subsequently, he is clever enough to fool the cyclops once more when he utters, “‘...Noman is my name; Noman is what mother and father call me and all my friends,’” (114).…
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” What makes a hero? To be known as a hero is one thing, but what is a true hero? Well, it depends on whom you ask. To some, a hero might just be a person who is courageous and brave.…
Odysseus reunites with his father and regains his family and kingdom. After twenty years, risking his life and others, he manages to complete his mission sailing home from Troy. There’s 4 different types of journeys that Odysseus experienced; physical, mental, spiritual and emotional. Physical journey is the challenges and obstacles a traveller can face. Odysseus faced the Cyclops, Scylla and Charybdis, the Sirens, and etc.…
In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels a long journey back to his home, Ithaca, after fighting in the Trojan War for 10 long years. However, I strongly believe Odysseus himself was the reason that he witnessed a long journey returning to his homeland. If he hadn’t made specific decisions, I’d expect that Odysseus would be able to return earlier. In the epic, I believe that three major decisions could’ve helped Odysseus sail back towards home sooner if he had chosen the right choice. One of the significant decisions is Odysseus’ accord to rest on the Cyclops’ island and approach the Cyclops’ cave.…
What if the person one looks up to or longs to return is not the person they expect that person to be? In the Odyssey, by Homer, this is the case for Odysseus. He is not the man everyone thinks he is. To begin with, the epic the Odyssey is about the return of the “great” king of Ithaka, Odysseus, from the Trojan War. He spends ten years fighting the war and is now on his way home where he is creating tension that is prolonging his return to Ithaka.…
Odysseus first encountered the Cyclops when the ship arrived on the land, where there is a boulder in the way. Odysseus believes the Cyclops is strong enough to move the boulder out the way. When the Cyclops first arrives, Odysseus and the men feel threatened, but Odysseus soon calms the Cyclops down and offers wine after eating down a few men. This is showed through the statement, “Cyclops, try some wine/ Here’s liquor to wash down your scraps of men/ I meant it for an offering/ if you would help us home” (ix, 256-259).…
A giant, one-eyed Cyclops, who bashes the brains of Odysseus’ men, dismembers them, and then consumes every piece, sounds like a frightening monster. However, Polyphemos’ barbaric actions are not much different from Odysseus’ slaughter of the suitors later in the epic poem. Both Polyphemos and Odysseus are associated to acting like a mountain lion. Polyphemos catches two of Odysseus’ men, “beats their brains out, spattering the floor,” and devours the men, “gaping and crunching like a mountain lion” (9: 303, 305). Similarly, the old Nurse finds Odysseus, “spattered and caked with blood, like a mountain lion when he has gorged upon an ox” (22: 419-420).…
When he and his men get trapped inside the cyclops's cave, he figures out a way for them to get out. His men suggest killing him but then he remembers that he needs someone to move the boulder. Then the men try to move it themselves but the boulder does not move. Then Odysseus comes up with a plan. He says that they will get the cyclops drunk, stab him in the eye with a large stick, then the cyclops will open the boulder to get help.…
When he attacks the Cyclops by stabbing him in the eye with his spear after he is asleep, the Cyclops shrieks, “Noman is killing me by some kind of trick!” After the Cyclops is blinded, Odysseus derives a plan to escape the cave. The plan was to cling to the bellies of the monstrous sheep: “each middle sheep carried a man underneath, protected by the two on either side” three sheep to a…
