In the story of “A&P” a boy named Sammy was 17 years old and he worked at a convenient store called A&P. when he worked one day a small group of girls came in and were wearing bathing suits. His boss was not fond of the dress attire the girls were wearing. So, the Manager asked the girls to leave. This made Sammy furious. But really all he was doing was boosting his pride so he could talk to the girls. He quit in a last Second rage and when he went outside the door of his job he found out that the girls were gone. Sammy the main Character of “A&P” let these three girls who did not know his name and his manager get to him. He was making decisions that affected him is a negative way. He was a Cashier at the store and a young man at the age of seventeen. When you are seventeen as a boy you believe that you are a man and that you could do anything and the girl will always see. His boss Lengel wanted the girls to leave the store. Lengel was an uptight manager and did everything by the book. Lengel basically embarrassed the girls in the store about their attire and how unfitting it was for them to wear it inside of a store. Sammy saw the injustice and became infuriated with his Lengel. Truly it was his hormones telling him to do things he would normally not do. He saw the girl and his desires were aroused and he became found of her from the moment she walked in. He called her Queenie and to Sammy she was the most attractive of the three. As his manager told the girls to leave, he watched and tried to fight back. Even though his efforts were futile, he still tried to tell Lengel he was wrong for what he did and Sammy came up with a decision to quit working at his job. In life men have oversized egos. In the story “The Man Who was Almost a Man” Dave allowed his ego from the beginning affect his judgement. He was being bullied by his co-workers because they still saw him as a child. Dave did not like how he was being treated so he came up with an idea that he could get a gun and that would make him a man. He believed that every man has a gun and the only way he would be treated as such is if he had a gun. His ego took him far, but he was afraid to ask his mom for it, but after dinner, he built the courage to ask her while she was not in front of his dad. He begged his mom more and more to have the weapon so that he could feel like a man. Once he got it, he felt empowered that he needed to use it. He messed up and shot the donkey which after everyone found out it was him, he lost his drive to have the gun and was scared to have it because when he fired the weapon the recoil hurt him. When he went back for the weapon he found pride in himself to want to be treated as a man and then his ego grew too big so he ran away from home. In the short story “A&P” Sammy ego did not take place till his manager got on the girls about the dress-code of stores. Sammy also felt empowered, but wanted to stop his manager from being cruel, but also look good for the girls. He wanted to cool so he could try and have a chance with a Queenie.
