The debate on guns is dominated by the mass shootings recently seen. Today people are arguing that gun policies need to change due to mass shootings, but gun violence is actually way down, even though mass shootings have taken national attention.
In 1993 about 22,400 people were killed by gun homicide; now it is only about 11,200 deaths due to homicide. Even though gun violence is down, people are pushing for stricter gun control due to the media attention on recent mass shootings.
Now it seems like every time we turn on the television another tragedy has occurred, the actual effect of gun violence on the country is minimal. There are around 2.5 million deaths annually in the United States and about 11,200 are due to murder with a firearm. Only about 0.00448% of the deaths in the country occur from a firearm. This equates to about 450 deaths out of every 100000. Compared to other causes of death in the United States, Heart disease is about 25% of total death in the country while violent gun death is about 0.00448% of total death. Gun violence is a tragedy, but it is not an epidemic.
