Over the course of this year, the English II class has read many non-fiction texts. The first text that showed the importance of family was I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. In this book, Maya Angelou explains her life and how racism has affected her and helped her to fight for African-American rights. The importance of family is expressed when her grandmother says, “You children is the most ungrateful things I ever did see. You think your momma and poppa went to all the trouble to send you these nice play pretties to make you go out in the cold and cry?” (pg.43). This part is about when Maya Angelou had received gifts from her parents, who did not live with her. The gifts were supposed to be uplifting for them and give them …show more content…
Her grandmother taught her everything that would make her successful. The next example is about when her grandmother is telling her goodbye and she says, “You be a good girl now. You hear? Don’t you make people think I didn’t raise you right.” (pg.47). Her grandmother is telling her that she is now on her own, she must make her own decisions and use the good judgement her grandmother gave her. Everything her grandmother taught her is put to use when she no longer has the advice to turn to. This example shows how her grandmother raised her and how she was a big influence on how Mrs. Angelou acted. Throughout her early life, her grandmother was the only adult she could turn to. Her grandmother helped her to solve problems she was having with other kids and with school. This helped her to develop the good traits her grandmother possessed and use them when her grandmother was not there to help her. Being the only adult family member, Maya Angelou greatly looked up to her grandmother and absorbed everything her grandmother told her. Without the affect of her grandmother and the rest of her family, Maya Angelou would not be as successful as she is …show more content…

She also talks about how Cassie has a lasting affect on their family and how she help form them into the people they are today. On page 60, her mother says, “Needless to say, our meeting at the sheriff's office made us more determined than ever to protect Cassie from any influence that would pull her away from us, including her own friends.” This shows how Cassie’s family is taking extreme measures to keep her safe and away from the bad influences her friends had. The effect of Cassie’s friends was extensive enough that her parents needed to have the law get involved. This shows how her family is looking out for her and her best interests moving forward. This also shows the importance of family by how her family is trying to keep her as safe as they possibly can. They are also trying to teach her about discipline and what it can to do make someone want to change their motives. Although Cassie does not agree with it at the time, she will soon find out that her parents are doing her a huge favor. If Cassie’s family had not cared about her she could have been facing a possible life or death situation, ending her life shorter than it already was. Her family kept her away from her friends who

The question of whether the educational systems are encouraging competition depending on the students engagement is a tricky one. On one side, one can feel that these competitions encourage students to have an environment with competition that focuses more on getting the material completed and becoming number one. However on the other hand one might feel that schools do not encourage competition it focuses more on actually understanding the material. Evidence suggests that most people feel that education should be taught in a different ways where students feel encouraged to prosper. By examining “I Know Why The Caged Bird Cannot Read” by Francine Prose, “Emerson on Education” by Ralph Waldo, “Superman and me” by Sherman Alexie, and “Best in Class” by Margaret Talbot, it will become more…

Bailey, who is a character from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was scared because he saw a dead body, and he had to carry that body to the prison. “The man was dead and rotten. Not stinking but rotten… I picked up a side of the sheet and walked right in the calaboose with the men” (Angelou 196, 198). Even though Bailey was frightened of seeing a dead body, he was more terrified that this could happen to any African American.…

The twenty-ninth chapter of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is used to describe Clidell and all his friends to the reader. Angelou describes how Clidell’s friends told her about all the cons and tricks they have used on wealthy white men in their lives. I think of a lot of these tricks as cruel and wrong, but I assume that these men thought they were justified. I think that Angelou provides a good reason for these cons when she says, “The needs of a society determine its ethics, and in the Black American ghettos the hero is that man who is offered only the crumbs from his country’s table but by ingenuity and courage is able to take for himself a Lucullan feast.” (Ch. 29, pg. 224).…

In the essay “Graduation,” Maya Angelou narrates her 1940, eighth grade graduation from the persona of her younger self, Marguerite Johnson, illustrating the impact of racism towards African-Americans in society. Angelou provides readers at large, the depiction of her own graduation, as well as educational and societal issues through the use of juxtaposition, imagery and various rhetorical questions. In doing so, Angelou is able to convey her younger self’s developing epiphany in the essay. Initially, Angelou juxtaposes the schools of the white and African-American people to depict the harsh reality of education and society, as well as display the initial development of Angelou’s epiphanic views. Foremost, at the beginning of this essay, it is evident that Angelou implies the subordination and racial discrimination of the African-American race.…

Francine Prose appeals to ethos in multiple personaes in her essay I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, including being a professional researcher, a former high school student, and a parent. In the second paragraph of page 91, Prose appeals to ethos as a professional researcher who looks for comprehensive sources of evidence to increase her credibility. Prose lists the sources of the “photocopy pages” she has collected before she states her observation. By saying “what emerges from these photocopied pages distributed in public, private, and Catholic schools as well as in military academies...in rural Oregon and urban Missouri”, Prose proves that her statements are representative and reliable because her sources provide all-inclusive datas…
