Over the course of this year, the English II class has read many non-fiction texts. The first text that showed the importance of family was I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. In this book, Maya Angelou explains her life and how racism has affected her and helped her to fight for African-American rights. The importance of family is expressed when her grandmother says, “You children is the most ungrateful things I ever did see. You think your momma and poppa went to all the trouble to send you these nice play pretties to make you go out in the cold and cry?” (pg.43). Her grandmother taught her everything that would make her successful. The next example is about when her grandmother is telling her goodbye and she says, “You be a good girl now. You hear? Don’t you make people think I didn’t raise you right.” (pg.47). Her grandmother is telling her that she is now on her own, she must make her own decisions and use the good judgement her grandmother gave her. Everything her grandmother taught her is put to use when she no longer has the advice to turn to. This example shows how her grandmother raised her and how she was a big influence on how Mrs. Angelou acted. Throughout her early life, her grandmother was the only adult she could turn to. Her grandmother helped her to solve problems she was having with other kids and with school. This helped her to develop the good traits her grandmother possessed and use them when her grandmother was not there to help her. Being the only adult family member, Maya Angelou greatly looked up to her grandmother and absorbed everything her grandmother told her. This a book about Cassie Bernall, told through her mother and other sources. Mrs. Bernall talks about Cassie’s life and her religious faith, which led to her death. She also talks about how Cassie has a lasting affect on their family and how she help form them into the people they are today. On page 60, her mother says, “Needless to say, our meeting at the sheriff's office made us more determined than ever to protect Cassie from any influence that would pull her away from us, including her own friends.” This shows how Cassie’s family is taking extreme measures to keep her safe and away from the bad influences her friends had. The effect of Cassie’s friends was extensive enough that her parents needed to have the law get involved. This shows how her family is looking out for her and her best interests moving forward. This also shows the importance of family by how her family is trying to keep her as safe as they possibly can. They are also trying to teach her about discipline and what it can to do make someone want to change their motives. Although Cassie does not agree with it at the time, she will soon find out that her parents are doing her a huge favor. If Cassie’s family had not cared about her she could have been facing a possible life or death situation, ending her life shorter than it already was. Her family kept her away from her friends who
