Now, it seems real, artificial robots can give us information we are looking for, they help us with our everyday lives. The technology is now advancing to the point where people are exploring the idea of using robots as a way to get housework done, make meals, and live their lives comfortably. There’s a question to be asked in this though. Are we changing what it means to be human, or are we becoming something else other than human. In Asimov’s “The Bicentennial Man”, there is a robot that goes by the name of Andrew. He is the families helper robot. Andrew cooks, cleans, and cares for the family. He is unlike any other robot of his time though, he is able to think like a human. This draws the question,”Can technology become too advanced?” If a robot can take on the traits of a human and think like a human, can they also be as dangerous as humans? Is what makes us human our ability to act on our own instincts, whether those instincts are good or bad? If Andrew was able to take on the characteristics of a human and end up becoming human, im sure that he could have become evil and kill if he wanted too. In Asimov’s “The Bicentennial Man”, Andrew wanted his freedom but as Little Miss says,”He postponed it for fear he would hurt you.” (Asimov 6) If Andrew could understand fear and hurt, why couldn’t he hurt someone. Why wouldn’t he find it necessary to kill if he found …show more content…
It changes how we are living our day to day lives. According to Madlen Davies, a writer for the website daily mail, “The average person spends 8 hours and 41 minutes on electronic devices.” This is more time spent on technology than an average person’s time sleeping at night. This is what “being human” has become. Experts have said that over time a lack of sleep can lead to a weakened immune system and an increased risk of other things. While these risks seem life changing, they can all be fixed with an implement of technology to a person’s body. Technology has changed what it means to be human. People say that what makes us human is our free will. Do us as humans still have a complete free will? We no longer choose to use technology, we just do it subconsciously. It’s generally the last thing people see at night and the first thing they reach for in the morning. We no longer have control of our use of technology, it controls us. Is this what it means to be human? The answer to that question is no, while people are reliant on technology, it is not what makes us human. Yet people have it in their minds that technology is what now makes us human. People who say this are wrong, humans that rely on technology are now something different, to a certain
