Being a hero is much different than possessing heroic qualities. A hero is a person that has been noted for their courage and noble achievements. In some minds, it could also be a musician, a family member, or a soldier. Being heroic, however, means to have characteristics of a hero. A person who risks their life to protect our freedom or even an ordinary man or woman that remains unselfish in a time of tragedy can become a hero.

To become a hero, you would need to act selfless and courageous in a time of darkness or disaster. A common man is someone who is undistinguished and lacks special qualities. “The Man in the Water” was an ordinary man who was caught acting to save others before himself. After a plane crashed into the Potomac, he was offered a lifeline to safety but handed his life

She stood up for the right of any child to have an education and survived an assassination endeavor. She was noted saying, “I had two options. One was to remain silent and wait to be killed. And the second was to speak up and then be killed.” (Yousafzai). She describes how she had a choice to stand up for what she believed in and be killed or to be silenced and killed. She knew either way that she was going to die, yet stood up for her right and the right of many other children for access to education.

Both, Malala and “The Man in the Water”, show courage and selflessness through their heroic acts. They are representations of how any man or woman can become a hero. They show how a simple person can change in a second, and save others. They both knew that they would be risking their lives, yet they choose to help others. Many ordinary men and women are considered heroes today. It can be the American veteran or soldier that risks their lives to protect our country or it could even be the person that held the door open for you yesterday.
