Life is not easy. Sometimes we need a long time to make a decision for the certain things, which can change our life forever; however, not all decisions are the right one. At some moments, we think our decision again, we might feel awesome, or depressed. Our feeling depends on the outcome of our decision. The Man He Killed by Thomas Hardy and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost use diction, rhyme, and alliteration to describe decisions, which change their mind about reality. The Man He killed describes a narrator’s experience when he has to kill his enemy, who he never meet, and doesn’t do anything wrong to him. The assonance alliteration illustrates the depressed decision, which makes them regret. Hardy uses the word “foe, so, and although” to express the complicated feeling of a soldier, who fight in the war without knowing tomorrow day. He uses “foe” to call his enemy. He doesn’t want to kill a person, who he never harms him. They go into the war with two reasons; protect their country and support their family. The war doesn’t bring any treasure to them. In the war zone, he calls all his enemies are “foes”, but after coming back home, they are all his “fellows”. Although they don’t speak the same language or share the same culture, they fight as same reasons such as support their family and proud of their country. In contrast, The Road Not Taken has totally different emotion with a soldier. He doesn’t go to the war and doesn’t kill people. As the same experience with a soldier, he fights with his own decisions. Frost uses a lot of “O” sounds in the first stanza, which describes the two possibilities of life, but he just can pick only one road, and the another road is a mystery. The character creates the possible decisions and confuses himself with mystery solution. If people are happy with their decision, they won’t draw the impossible road in their mind. “O” sounds like sad and uncomfortable, which the author tries to share with readers.
