Behind The Mask: Film Analysis

I examined the documentary Behind the Mask, which was released in 1991. This documentary explains the actions of the IRA and the events during the troubles. Throughout the 1 hour showing, multiple members of The IRA and Sinn Fein were interviewed and asked about their experiences in the IRA and living through the troubles. I wanted to examine this documentary to get a glimpse into the minds of people going through the troubles and why they turned to the IRA. Reading and watching information from the troubles helps clarify why people joined the IRA, however, hearing the explanations from real people truly put the whole conflict in perspective and added a new layer of depth into my understanding of the troubles. For my additional research into …show more content…
Unlike watching a movie, evaluating a documentary requires focus and a great deal of attention to detail. Throughout my viewing of this documentary I had to pause and write down multiple notes to ensure I had all the information it was providing. One thing I struggled with immensely while viewing this documentary was the lack of subtitles showing the dates the interviewees were referring to. The only mention of dates came from the interviewee themselves and this happened rather quickly. If the film would have provided a more detailed explanation of the dates that were happening, it would have been much easier to follow and understand. Due to the lack of clearly available dates, the film lost some of its momentum in terms of teaching the viewer what was happening throughout the troubles. While it is much more difficult and time consuming to examine a documentary critically, it provides the viewer with a much deeper understanding of the context and helps to catch any information that is not factual or that may be biased. By closely examining this film I was able to determine that it was factual however a little biased as it never mentioned what it was like for the Protestant people at the time. Examining a documentary critically allowed me to gather much more information from the film than if I had simply watched it without paying close attention and taking detailed

While doing a good job of presenting the information and engaging the audience it seems to lack purpose in guiding the viewer in a particular direction. Advocating the value and cultural relevance of traditional film processes and detailing an emerging cultural relevance in the new medium is all well and fine, for first year film students or film review critics but has little overt relevance to the everyday workplace or personal environment. The documentary does excel in raising awareness of these communicative mediums. Detailing the process and the personal effort that goes into creating films is certainly an informative and subject-worthy effort. Giving me a reason to ‘care’ remains the…

One of the main focus points towards the end of the documentary was the raid on Fred Hampton’s apartment and his subsequent murder by the police. It was shown in the investigation how only one bullet was fired from a Panther weapon yet the apartment was riddled with bullets. At the very end of the documentary, a line of text appeared reading “There are over 20 Panthers that remain in prison.” This text almost serves as a rallying call to show how their movement still is not over. Overall, the documentary does an excellent job of refraining from opinion and sticks to hard evidence and truth.…

Personally, I found the film The Mask You Live In very eye opening. It focuses around how young boys are taught to portray their assigned gender and how they carry the lessons they are given into manhood. From as young as six years old, a boy is taught not to show emotion; that crying and hugging and any public displays of affection towards friends or loved ones in too feminine and unmanly. Boys learn to watch their father figures and associate them as the ideal role model for masculinity. When a father shows aggression towards a woman who then starts to cry, a young boy would not initially know what to make of it, and would possibly then associate violence with being manly and strong emotions as weak and girly.…

This film was organized well and definitely showed evidence of Guldbrandsen’s argument. Whether it was interviewing the Vice President of Zambia, workers at Mopani, or government officials, he received enough data to justify his explanation on why Zambia is financially unstable. A minor flaw I noticed in the documentary was Guldbrandsen not being persistent enough with the people he wanted to interview but turned him down or didn’t respond to him at all. I feel like he should’ve sneakily found a way to record them and then include that evidence in this film. Besides that small weakness, I thought this documentary was exceedingly informative and the data he acquired was used effectively.…

I often found it very difficult to keep up with things because the narrator would be talking about one topic and then jump to another topic but then come back to the original topic. I just found that extremely hard to keep up with and I think I could have gotten more out of the information if it was organized in a better formation. The speaker also was distracting by how he carried himself while trying to educate the viewers. His apparel blended in with scenery and it was very distracting when it some what looked like he had a floating head. I realize that has nothing to do with the content of the documentary but when it comes to doing a review of the episode as a whole I did find that that took away from the…
