The Makings of a True Hero
A hero is arguably one of the most important sparks in an individual’s life. These heroes come from an array of places, whether it be books, movies, or reality. Similarly, the definition of a true hero can vary from person to person. Some individuals define a hero as a fictional character who is invincible, dresses in a cape, or can fly. Others even consider a hero as a member of the military. My grandmother lost her mother at a young age and after her mother’s death, her father remarried. The woman my great grandfather remarried was strangely similar to the evil step mother in Cinderella’s story. My grandmother’s stepmother made her do all of the housework, all of the gardening, all of the cooking, and all of the cleaning. My grandmother’s stepmother did this for no other reason than to be unkind. This stepmother did everything in her power to make my grandmother suffer through never ending work, unkind words, locking her in closets, attempting to keep her home from school, and trying to act similarly towards my grandmother’s younger brother. My grandmother is her own hero just as much as she is both her younger brother’s and mine. With a father who did nothing about the unkindness and cruelty from his wife and a younger brother to protect, my grandmother never gave up fighting not only the cruel acts of her stepmother but also the desire to be angry and vengeful. She unceasingly kept fighting the hurt and pain her stepmother caused her. My grandmother kept on progressing, never giving into fear, hurt, or pain. She continued going to school, doing all the house work, protecting and looking out for her brother, and staying positive, courageous and extra kind to everyone. The life my grandmother lives today is not the life that an individual not of a heroic character could live. This is known because according to …show more content…

The term “hero” has been around since the late fourteenth century; however, the term is of an uncertain origin (Etymology, paragraph 2). Based upon controversial etymology beliefs, Webster’s Dictionary defines a ‘hero’ as an individual that is admired for his or her great acts or fine qualities. According to Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an individual must go through the cycle of the hero 's journey. The life of a real life hero is reflected by the epic literary example “The Hero’s Journey” that is exhibited in the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces; therefore, a hero in today’s world must undergo the same twelve stages that are listed in “The Hero’s Journey.” The hero’s journey is known for telling…

According to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, “Heroes are selfless people who perform extraordinary acts.” When making a decision, most individuals will seek the choice that will benefit them; however, heroes often do the opposite. Heroes tend to make decisions based on what will benefit individuals in their society, and those who are counting on them. For example, a hero from a movie might risk his or her own life to save the life of a child or an elder in danger. In Updike’s “A & P,” Sammy states, “Remembering how he made that pretty girl blush makes me so scrunchy inside I punch the No Sale tab and the machine whirs “pee-pul” and the drawer splats out.”…
