A hero is arguably one of the most important sparks in an individual’s life. These heroes come from an array of places, whether it be books, movies, or reality. Similarly, the definition of a true hero can vary from person to person. Some individuals define a hero as a fictional character who is invincible, dresses in a cape, or can fly. Others even consider a hero as a member of the military. Countless people around the world have heroes, however, the definition of a hero to me is not a man in a cape, but a real individuals right here beside me; individuals who never give up and keep fighting for what is right, no matter what demons may come their way.

My grandmother lost her mother at a young age and after her mother’s death, her father remarried. The woman my great grandfather remarried was strangely similar to the evil step mother in Cinderella’s story. My grandmother’s stepmother made her do all of the housework, all of the gardening, all of the cooking, and all of the cleaning. My grandmother’s stepmother did this for no other reason than to be unkind. This stepmother did everything in her power to make my grandmother suffer through never ending work, unkind words, locking her in closets, attempting to keep her home from school, and trying to act similarly towards my grandmother’s younger brother. My grandmother is her own hero just as much as she is both her younger brother’s and mine. With a father who did nothing about the unkindness and cruelty from his wife and a younger brother to protect, my grandmother never gave up fighting not only the cruel acts of her stepmother but also the desire to be angry and vengeful. She unceasingly kept fighting the hurt and pain her stepmother caused her. My grandmother kept on progressing, never giving into fear, hurt, or pain. She continued going to school, doing all the house work, protecting and looking out for her brother, and staying positive, courageous and extra kind to everyone.
