Daniel Murray The Maker's Eye Summary

After reading the article, “The Maker’s Eye” by Donal Murray, I agree with the author on how writing isn’t a one step process and one strategies to become better writers. Murray states that when writers write and pause to look at others point of view, they go back and change their writing. It is true when he says that most writers are harsh on their writing and themselves. Reflecting upon myself and high school years, I believe that it’s true to look at other’s point of view and edit because I knew I wasn’t the best writer therefore making me not believing in myself.

Once writers are sure they got the other four elements, they look at the structure of different types of writing such as narrative and argumentative, within the entire piece. I know for a fact in my writing, I’m all over the place. However, reading through the article and handbook helped me try to fix up my little problems and add more detail. Next, is development, where most writers spend the majority time making sure there is enough evidence for readers to grasp what the writer is trying to say. In high school, it did take a while for me to really find the right information to support my writing and make it more clear. Which leads to dimension and making sure there are an even balance of cause and effect, keeping the reader interested. Keeping the reader interested is one of the main goals for me. However, I never really knew how to write a certain way to keep a reader interested. Finally, finding a voice within the writing to me takes a lot of understanding. Murray states, “Its what is between the words on the page, which glues the piece together.” Writers have their own voice and I believe that it is good to put it out on paper. I never really understood the concept of having a voice within my writing until reading more and more excerpts in school.
