Inclusive Education In Action: Chapter Analysis

The first chapter that I wanted to write about was chapter 3. In my opinion, I thought this was one of the most important chapters in the entire book. I thought this was such an influential topic because it focused on one of the biggest parts of a person’s life, their education. It all started with a protest, which was known as the Gallaudet protest. The protest was centered around the fact that there was a deaf school that wouldn’t let a person who was deaf run the school. It seemed very contradictory to me, and I was very happy to see that people did take immediate actions. The chapter did a great job of explaining the whole situation and the response that it warranted from many of the people involved. They also make promote a lot of inclusive education policies, which are being pushed today. Some of these include promoting the rules that are being established in the world. One of these projects is called Inclusive Education in Action. The mission of IEA is to connect the way from policy to practice. Essentially, their goal is to make sure that the laws, policies, and rules are being followed so people with disabilities gain the same education as people without disabilities. These groups have done a great job of making sure that the laws are followed to protect people with disabilities. A lot of these laws had a huge positive impact on our society. One of the major acts was called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This act “requires all public schools to make available to all eligible children with disabilities a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment appropriate to their individual needs” (“A Guide to Disability Rights Laws”). One of the responsibilities that this act says is that each student receives a custom IEP, Individualized Education Program, to help them achieve their educational
