The Great Gatsby Conflict Essay

The major conflict that takes place throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is Mr. Gatsby himself trying to win over the love of his life Daisy Buchanan, even though she is married herself and he lets nothing get in his way of that. To start off, Gatsby buys an extremely lavish mansion in West Egg, that is directly located across the bay of Daisy 's home, in East Egg. While Nick himself lives next door to Gatsby, once he arrives back into town for the summer, he goes to East Egg to visit his cousin Daisy and meets her friend Jordan Baker. Jordan remarks that Nick must know Gatsby, while Daisy states, “Gatsby, what Gatsby?” (Fitzgerald 11). Even with Gatsby not present in the room, he is still able to get in Daisy’s head. With everyone at an awkward stance, knowing that Daisy was having an affair with Gatsby and that Tom as well was having his own affair, everyone decides to go into the city together to rent out a room and try to stay cool for the summer. Everyone leaves more distressed than they did upon arriving. Daisy and Gatsby drive home together, with Daisy driving and Tom’s mistress, Myrtle Wilson sees the car than tom had originally drove to the city and runs in front of the car and Daisy does not stop and ends up killing Myrtle and when Tom drives by, he becomes devastated that his lover is dead, because that is who he truly loved, not Daisy. Tom being furious instantly blames Gatsby for the whole ordeal. After Daisy hit Myrtle, Gatsby told her that he would take the blame. Mr. Wilson comes over to the Buchanan’s and is just a wreck and Tom hints to him that Mr. Gatsby in West Egg had hit his wife, furious Wilson marches over to his house, where Gatsby is taking one last swim before summer is over and Mr. Wilson pulls out his gun and begins to shoot, instantly killing Gatsby and then himself. no one knew what had happened. Nick was one of the only few that attended his father alongside Mr. Gatz, Gatsby’s father, there was no Daisy and no one else that claimed to be his friend.
