Obesity is a very common condition affecting millions of people. Not only is obesity unhealthy, but it could be very costly, and most of all, very detrimental to your life and well-being. Technically speaking, everyone can become obese, including you. Obesity affects certain groups more than others. Obesity rates in adults have been increasing tremendously. The overall average for adults is currently 34.6%, which is more than one-third of the whole U.S. population.

African American communities have a lot of factors that lead to obesity. For instance, access to nutrition and healthy food is a major problem within this population. Another major factor that influences the cause of obesity in African Americans is racism. Today, racism still exists in the U.S. A lot of African Americans are still treated poorly and unfairly. This puts a lot of stress on the population which leads to health issues. Body images is portrayed differently than the white population. When the word “obesity” comes to mind, many people assume that the main problem is over consuming the amount of food. Food is definitely one of the factors, but there are so many more.
Culture – Many cultures don’t judge others by the way they look. Body image is not always a huge concern in certain cultures. Also, Americans tend to celebrate and encourage bad eating habits. For example, the holidays are coming up. Many families celebrate by feasting on scrumptious foods. Every culture is different, but a lot of us turn to tasty meals to make us feel happier.
Poverty/Income- Many Americans today have a limited income, and sometimes that income is just not enough to buy healthy fruits and vegetables. Also, when living in a low- income community, access to healthier foods are much harder to find. Unhealthy food is easier to find and cheaper than healthy food.
