Lost Brother Authors create narrators to better structure their work and create conflict as well as establish the tone and mood to entice readers. James Hurst’s story the “Scarlet Ibis” shows that you should have hope even in the darkest times. Having a first person narrator's account of the conflict while establishing tone and mood conveys this message. Having William Armstrong’s brother as the narrator gives us his view on the passage.…
People love stories ranging from two-year-olds sitting on their grandpas’ knees to teenagers with their rebellious attitudes and even eighty year olds sitting back reminiscing about life; they all can enjoy a good story. Stories can be told verbally, through acting, or through writing. A good writer can weave stories or analogies in his or her paper that draw people in and fascinate them. In fact, analogies are one of the strongest writing techniques. Writers Shaun Raviv and Michael Clemens use analogies in their writings because analogies build interest, simplify and lower natural resistances, and stir emotions.…

A successful published author will always have a story to tell about their failures, fears, and the people that impacted their writing. For authors such as Stephen King, his process of writing begins with a small idea, that sometimes sticks around and evolved into main characters or they become irrelevant by the end of his novel. During a podcast, Stephen King advices young writers to read a lot, write a lot, and continue to be inspired by their writing. Similar to Stephen King, another great fictional novelist by the name of Wally Lamb constantly changes the process of each novel he writes. For instance, he can be inspired by a voice, moving image, music or they can come to him via-anecdote.…
Sei Shōnagon’s Personality and Time There are two ways of which an author could write a novel. Depending on the chosen way of writing an author will either use tone in the text of the book to add their character. Or, the incorporation of their nature into that of the setting of the story. In the case of Sei Shōnagon she develops her whiney disposition by using tone in the written text; and of using the setting of the Heian period of Japan in The Pillow Book.…
Edgar Allan Poe, a dark and mysterious writer, a poet, a “subsequent” author. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Poe was left alone at a young age, with the disappearance of his father, and death of his mother early in life. Already we see Poe has been through a seemingly dark life. He published his first book at eighteen and made not a dollar. Went in the military and was dismissed after skipping classes.…
Playwright James Baldwin once said, “You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. You were not expected to aspire to excellence: you were expected to make peace with mediocrity”. Such an environment is reflected in X: A Novel, which discusses the mistreatment of African Americans during the period of the 1930-40’s. Ilyasah Shabazz’s and Kekla Magoon’s extensive use of literary elements and effective point of view assert that the systemic oppression of African Americans can be attributed to individual intolerance. Additionally, they contend that this can cause young African Americans to fall on the wrong side of the law.…
All authors use different techniques in order to improve their story. One technique they use are literary devices. Two stories for example that use these literary devices are “A Rose For Emily” and “The Cask Of Amontillado”. “In the Rose For Emily” the story takes place in a post civil war jefferson,a small town in the deep south of the united states, while “The Cask Of Amontillado” take place in an underground catacombs somewhere in Italy during the carnival season. In the two stories “A Rose For Emily” written by William Faulkner and “The Cask Of Amontillado written” by Edgar Allan Poe they share similarities and differences in plot, character and author writing style.…
The Devil and Rumpelstiltskin Literature is full of genres. The genres can be complex to simple. They also can seem to be equate, especially if it is in the same genre. The genre of fairy tales or folk tales is an entire genre of made-up stories for children usually ending with a theme or a life lesson. Grimm’s Fairy Tales is a twisted version of the known fairy tales.…
The narrative voice is the perspective of a novel, and it is through this voice that the reader receives and becomes connected to the story. This voice can appear in a variety of ways; for example, one common perspective is first person point of view, through which the narrator speaks directly to the reader by using personal pronouns such as ‘I.’ By creating a character that speaks directly to the reader, they become personally tied to what the narrator is telling them. In this way the reader must come to rely on what the character divulges to them, similar to the way a person might need to when talking to another person. The Feast of Love, by Charles Baxter, takes this common perspective and twists it in a unique and influential way.…
The true state of a relationship is difficult to detect based solely on a couple’s appearance. In her short story, Katharine Brush is brief yet clear in illustrating this. Through the incorporation of imagery and diction, Brush is able to invoke both emotions and thought in the reader which help him/her to become fully submerged in the issue at hand in the story. This in turn aids the reader to become better aware and to fully understand what is going on, thus allowing the author to achieve her purpose of revealing the truth to the reader. One of the most noticeable literary devices used in the story is imagery.…
Authors may use different types of literary devices to maintain the reader’s attention in a story. A metaphor, simile, flashback, imagery, and an allusion are all examples of literary devices that can be used in a story to keep the reader engrossed. Kate Chopin used literary devices in her story “Desiree’s Baby” which helped her contribute to the success of the story. Kate Chopin used imagery on paragraph 6 to describe L’Abri and explain why it is a sad place to visit. Imagery is a visual symbolism the author uses to capture the reader’s interest.…
A Good Story is an Effective Story “High School is like a spork: it's a crappy spoon and a crappy fork, so in the end it's just plain useless.” - John Mayer. A story is more appealing to the audience and the reader when something is being described in detail like the John Mayer quote about high school and sporks. Also, when using literary elements, that pulls the reader in because they want to know what is being said or talked about. It puts a picture into the reader’s minds.…
O. Henry 's three stories, “A Retrieved Reformation,” “The Gift of the Magi,” and “The Last Leaf” demonstrates the talent of this writer. In all three of these stories, unique literary techniques are used to create plot twists and unexpected turns. A common literary technique used in O. Henry 's three stories is irony, which is used to create a humorous and surprising effect. In addition, O. Henry uses foreshadowing in all three stories in order to build suspense as the reader anticipates the surprise ending.…
Edgar Allen Poe is an American writer that is world renown for his dark writing style, which allows the reader to be engulfed into his tales of horror and mystery. The Cask of Amontillado is a classic Poe style story that is littered with unexpected twists and turns around every corner. The reader is able to watch from afar as the main character seeks revenge against his “friend” Fortunato. Poe’s ability to create a character like Montresor amazes me because of the unique way in which he reveals the main characters poor mental health without directly stating that he is insane. The gradual realization of this is what makes the story so unique to Poe’s style.…
