The Gift of the Magi, by O' Henry, utilizes allusion to portray a better understanding towards the theme of the story. The author references wealthy biblical figures to emphasize Jim and Della Young's obvious poverty. By stating that Della's hair is to be so gorgeous that it would devalue the Queen of Sheba's jewels and that Jim's watch is said to bring envy from King Solomon, the author highlights how precious Della and Jim regard their possessions. For the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon were both powerful monarchs renowned for their abundant wealth, to Jim and Della those two items are treasures. The author as well compares the young couple to the magi; the magi are often depicted as wise men that brought Jesus three expensive gifts: gold,
